As a community producer, you’ll maintain a high level of debate and interaction across theguardian.com, and other platforms, nurturing and guiding user discussion. You'll be connecting with readers from diverse backgrounds and encouraging them to interact with our journalists and each other on a broad range of subjects, from politics to foreign affairs, to culture and human endeavour, including via our new Conversations strand, part of our strategy of highlighting the expertise behind our journalism.

 

This is a permanent NUJ contract.

 

About the role

  • Help produce and publish Conversations articles for our new editorial strand, as directed by the head of community engagement. Leading conversations to produce questions and debate and be the mediator between our digital audience and journalists 
  • Act as a “host” for conversations on and off-platform: keeping conversation moving, being an identifiable, present, active member of the community and representative of the Guardian
  • Monitor all other remaining areas of reader comments on theguardian.com, ensuring debate is conducted within the guidelines set down in our terms and conditions and community standards, using community management tools and techniques 
  • Identify potential news stories or trends that will be of interest to editorial colleagues. 
  • Attend weekly and daily editorial meetings as required and help to plan and generate ideas 
  • Nurture debate through input to editorial initiatives and deployment of new technical tools
  • Ensure that theguardian.com has an atmosphere in its spaces for audience interaction that reflects GNM’s values and mission 
  • Liaise with and advise editorial staff over user interaction issues on comment threads, and assist editors with queries on comments and interaction with contributors, and to share and cultivate good community practice in the editorial and community teams.

 

About you

  • Demonstrable experience of participating and managing online communities, with a strong understanding of social media, audience behaviours and platform dynamics
  • Demonstrable interest in news topics and discussions; good awareness of the breadth of perspectives, issues, main arguments and schools of thought
  • Good understanding of the breadth of coverage of news on theguardian.com and Guardian channels on other platforms
  • Ability to follow discussions on international current affairs and a wide range of topics, with the ability to engage diverse audiences
  • Understanding of challenges in the intersection between community and editorial, and attempts to resolve them
  • Understanding of UK libel and defamation laws and journalistic ethics 
  • Understanding of challenges in community management, and attempts to resolve them
  • You will have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role

We currently operate a hybrid environment working at least three days a week from our offices in Kings Cross, central London.

Benefits at the Guardian

You'll have six weeks of annual leave per year (plus bank holidays) with the option to purchase an additional 5 days. Our pension scheme is generous; if you contribute 5% then we will contribute 8-12% (depending on your age).
