Overview of the Function

The Communications Coordinator role sits within the global brand & communications function with strong links to the US marketing and business development team. This role is focused on supporting the firm’s market positioning and brand in the US as well as its business development objectives as a key contributor on the US comms team.  

Role summary/purpose of job

The Communications Coordinator works under the daily guidance of the US communications lead to provide planning, content development, coordination, reporting, and operational support across the Brand & Communications function. The role supports the development and execution of internal and external communications initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, enhance the firm’s reputation and brand, and support overall growth objectives. Responsibilities include internal communications, media relations, thought leadership, social media, content management, measurement, communications operations and award & recognition submissions.

Key responsibilities and deliverables

  • Support the planning, coordination, execution and measurement of communications and brand initiatives across the US business.
  • Assist with media relations activities, including drafting press releases and media materials, maintaining media lists, preparing briefing materials and supporting deal publicity.
  • Support thought leadership and external positioning initiatives through content development, media outreach and campaign coordination.
  • Coordinate award, ranking and recognition submissions where appropriate, including maintaining submission calendars and drafting supporting content.
  • Assist with social media activities, including content creation, publishing support, campaign coordination and performance tracking as needed.
  • Draft and distribute internal communications, including leadership messages, employee announcements, intranet content, newsletters and town hall communications.
  • Support employee engagement campaigns and internal communication initiatives in partnership with HR, leadership and other business functions.
  • Maintain communications calendars and help ensure alignment across internal and external communications activities.
  • Monitor and report on communications performance, including media coverage, employee engagement, email communications, social media activity and other key metrics.
  • Support the maintenance of communications and marketing collateral, digital content and selected web pages as needed.
  • Provide administrative and operational support for communications projects, campaigns and events as needed.
  • Build strong working relationships with lawyers, business services teams and firm leadership to support communications priorities.
  • Undertake additional communications-related responsibilities as required.

Key requirements (Communication/skills/experience)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or English preferred
  • 1-3 years of relevant PR/communications experience; PR/communications agency experience a plus
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills (proficient in AP Style a plus)
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft office applications and AI use.
  • Strong familiarity (and comfort) with digital platforms and associated technology
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work well with lawyers and other professionals within all levels in the organization.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to learn and take on additional responsibilities
  • Experience interacting with law firm partners or C-suite executives a plus

For individuals assigned and/or hired to work in New York and California, Freshfields is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This compensation range is specific to the States of New York and California and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $75,000 to $90,000.
