The Southwest National Primate Research Center (SNPRC) and Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed), located in San Antonio, Texas, are seeking a Colony Administrator to support the care and management of nonhuman primate (NHP) colonies. This role is responsible for the oversight of three breeding colony resources – a baboon colony, a rhesus macaque colony, and a common marmoset colony – and the supervision of the three respective colony managers. This position reports to the SNPRC Associate Director for Research and will work collaboratively to oversee strategic colony management.  This role is for an open rank Staff Scientist, and as such is not required but is eligible and encouraged to pursue independent research and seek independent funding.

THE ROLE:

• Oversee the strategic plan for colony breeding. The strategic plan may include parameters such as colony size, genetic diversity, pedigree, purpose breeding for genotypes or phenotypes, and specific pathogen free characteristics. 

• Project future animal needs and animal production based on past and present research use. 

• Oversee the appropriate percentage of animals are assigned to breeding or projects. 

• Manage and support baboon, rhesus, and marmoset colony managers responsible for day-to-day colony management.

• Translate the strategic plans into breeding and management plans for the colony managers. 

• Oversee animal assignments to research studies or sales. 

• Work collaboratively with the SNPRC veterinary team to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare and care for these animals. 

• Chair the species advisory committees. 

• Write the colony components for P51/U42 grants and write the annual progress report for the colony components. 

• Provide reports on animal usage and availability quarterly, or as requested by NIH.

• Be a member of the NPRC’s Breeding Colony Management Consortium. Attend monthly teleconferences and annual in-person meetings. 

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:

• A doctoral degree in a relevant field or a DVM with at least two years of experience in primate research or resource management 

• Experience overseeing colony management, including breeding strategies, population planning, pedigree management, and census reporting

• 5 years’ experience in primate research or resource management preferred
