SUMMARY

The CNC Programmer develops efficient programs for fabricating tight-tolerance parts on three-, four-, and five-axis high-speed CNC machines. Working from customer designs, specifications, blueprints, mylars, and related technical data, this position determines machining requirements, plans detailed sequences of operations, selects appropriate tooling and cutting parameters, verifies programs, and optimizes cutter paths to maximize machine efficiency, quality, and safety.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop CNC programs for three-, four-, and five-axis high-speed machining centers using CAD/CAM software
  • Review customer designs, specifications, blueprints, mylars, loft data, and related documents to determine machining requirements
  • Plan detailed sequences of operations and provide complete supporting documentation for production use
  • Determine optimum cutter paths, feeds, speeds, cutter types, and material-removal methods for specific materials
  • Set up and program simple parts and tooling at Level I and complex five-axis parts at Level II and above
  • Design tooling for parts and assemblies; at Level III, create complex tooling designs and model parts from two-dimensional drawings and loft data
  • Verify and simulate CNC programs using Vericut and applicable posting software before release to manufacturing
  • Troubleshoot program, tooling, and machining issues and assist Manufacturing with process improvements
  • Maintain accurate program files, setup information, revision controls, and technical documentation
  • Collaborate directly with Engineering, Planning, Manufacturing, Quality, and multiple levels of management
  • At Level III, monitor work performed by CNC Programmers and provide technical guidance as needed
  • Use Windows-based computers, CATIA V5, Mastercam, Vericut, NWI Aerostructures manufacturing software, and other approved systems
  • Perform work from written and verbal instructions while meeting quality, schedule, and productivity expectations
  • Promote a safe, clean, and organized work environment; wear required personal protective equipment and promptly report injuries and unsafe conditions
  • Comply with company policies and procedures and perform other duties as assigned

 

 

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE

  • General manufacturing knowledge, including machining and related production processes
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand blueprints, mylars, specifications, loft data, and related technical documents
  • Knowledge of feeds, speeds, cutter types, material-removal methods, and machine codes
  • Knowledge of three-, four-, and five-axis programming methods and tooling design principles
  • Working knowledge of CATIA V5, Mastercam, Vericut, posting software, Windows-based computers, and NWI Aerostructures manufacturing software
  • Basic knowledge of statistical process control at Level II and above
  • Knowledge of program verification, documentation, revision control, and manufacturing process improvement

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Level I: High school diploma or equivalent required; mechanical aptitude and a strong work ethic desired; two to three years of manufacturing experience, preferably as a CNC machine operator; ability to program three- and four-axis parts using CAD/CAM software
  • Level II: All Level I requirements; high school diploma or equivalent plus college coursework or equivalent training in a related field; certified CATIA training or equivalent job-training experience; five or more years of programming experience preferred; three to five years of manufacturing experience preferred; ability to program three-, four-, and five-axis parts, design tooling, use Vericut, and use posting software
  • Level III: All Level I and Level II requirements; high school diploma or equivalent plus college coursework or equivalent training in a related field; certified CATIA training or equivalent job-training experience; ten or more years of programming experience preferred; five to ten years of manufacturing experience preferred; ability to model parts from two-dimensional drawings and loft data, design complex tooling, assist Planning, and monitor CNC programming work
  • All levels must be able to use NWI Aerostructures manufacturing software

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work requires a high level of exposure to computer screens
  • Constant repetitive use of the hands, wrists, and arms is required
  • Work includes occasional exposure to shop and manufacturing environments
  • Required personal protective equipment may include safety glasses, hearing protection, safety-toe shoes, and other equipment designated for the work area
  • Employees must report all work-related injuries to their supervisor as soon as possible and notify senior management when observed conditions do not comply with safety requirements

WORK AUTHORIZATION/SECURITY CLEARANCE

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • If a security clearance is required:
    • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain applicable security clearance requirements
    • Successful candidates must be able to obtain required Program Access approval, if applicable

 

Skills Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Develop CNC programs for three-, four-, and five-axis machines using CAD/CAM software
