- Lead evaluation and selection of database technologies on GCP (e.g., BigQuery, Cloud Spanner, AlloyDB, Bigtable, Cloud SQL, Firestore, Memorystore) based on workload requirements (latency, throughput, consistency, storage, cost).
- Design high-performance, low-latency data architectures for OLTP, OLAP, streaming, and hybrid workloads.
- Build and maintain production-grade database solutions: schema design, indexing strategies, partitioning, clustering, query optimization, and caching patterns.
- Reduce application and query latency through profiling, indexing, materialized views, denormalization strategies, caching, and network/infra tuning.
- Partner with data engineering, backend, and product teams to translate business requirements into data models and storage choices.
- Design replication, backup & recovery, disaster recovery, and data retention policies.
- Create operational runbooks, monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, and cost-optimization playbooks for database services.
- Evaluate and introduce new managed services and third-party tools when they clearly improve performance/cost/operability.
- Mentor engineers on database design, SQL performance, ACID vs BASE tradeoffs, and scalable architectural patterns.
- Establish standards and guardrails (IaC, automated tests, deployment processes) for database provisioning and schema changes.
- Present findings and recommendations to engineering leadership; quantify trade-offs (latency, cost, complexity).
- 6+ years working with production databases; 3+ years designing systems on Google Cloud Platform.
- Deep, hands-on experience with at least two of: BigQuery, Cloud Spanner, AlloyDB, Bigtable, Cloud SQL (Postgres/MySQL), Firestore.
- Strong SQL skills; experience with query profiling and optimization.
- Proven track record of reducing query and application latency (indexes, partitioning, caching, materialized views, denormalization).
- Experience with streaming and real-time pipelines (Pub/Sub, Dataflow, Kafka) and how storage choices impact them.
- Strong understanding of consistency, transactions, isolation levels and when to choose transactional vs eventually-consistent stores.
- Infrastructure as Code for databases (Terraform, Deployment Manager, or similar) and automated deployments/migrations.
- Monitoring/observability experience: Stackdriver/Cloud Monitoring, Prometheus/Grafana, query logs, slow-query analysis.
- Solid software engineering and data engineering skills: Python/Go/Java for tooling and ETL work.
- Experience with backup/restore, replication, HA setups, and DR planning.
- Equivalent competencies in any of the above will also be considered.
