About the Role

The Clinician (Primary Counselor) is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical services to adults receiving substance use treatment at the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) level of care. This role conducts assessments, develops individualized treatment plans, facilitates individual and group therapy, and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to support clients throughout their recovery journey. The Clinician utilizes evidence-based practices, DSM-5 and ASAM criteria, trauma-informed care, and crisis intervention techniques to address substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders while promoting long-term recovery and wellness.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field.
  • Active Texas clinical license required (LPC, LPC-Associate, LCDC, LCDC-I, LMSW, LCSW, LMFT, or LMFT-Associate).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with individuals experiencing behavioral health, trauma, mental health, or substance use disorders.
  • Experience providing individual counseling, treatment planning, and case management services.
  • Knowledge of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and ASAM placement criteria.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Strong written, verbal, and computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in residential or outpatient substance use treatment programs.
  • Experience with Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) services.
  • Knowledge of 12-Step recovery principles.
  • Experience conducting crisis intervention and suicide risk assessments.
  • Familiarity with Joint Commission and Texas HHSC standards.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary treatment teams and insurance documentation requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments, risk assessments, and diagnostic evaluations utilizing DSM-5 and ASAM criteria.
  • Develop, implement, and regularly update individualized treatment plans and discharge plans.
  • Provide individual, family, and group counseling using evidence-based and trauma-informed therapeutic interventions.
  • Facilitate psychoeducational and process groups while maintaining timely and accurate clinical documentation.
  • Complete weekly progress notes, treatment documentation, safety plans, discharge summaries, and all required clinical records.
  • Provide crisis intervention utilizing non-violent crisis intervention techniques and participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, case managers, admissions staff, and external providers to coordinate comprehensive client care.
  • Conduct collateral communication with referral sources and community providers to support continuity of care.
  • Assist clients experiencing treatment resistance through therapeutic engagement and AMA prevention interventions.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, Joint Commission, HHSC, and organizational policies.
  • Participate in staff meetings, clinical supervision, required trainings, competency assessments, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Promote a positive, collaborative, and recovery-oriented treatment environment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Skills

The Clinician applies advanced behavioral health knowledge to assess, diagnose, and treat individuals with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Strong clinical documentation skills ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and insurance requirements while supporting quality patient care. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential for building therapeutic relationships with clients and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams. Crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, and evidence-based therapeutic approaches—including CBT, motivational interviewing, and relapse prevention techniques—are utilized daily to support client recovery. Excellent organizational, time management, and critical thinking skills enable the Clinician to manage multiple cases while maintaining high standards of ethical, compassionate, and client-centered care.
