JOB PURPOSE:

The Clinical Psychiatrist will work as a key member of our multi-disciplinary wellness team at the Howard University College of Medicine’s Center for Spiritual Health and Wellness, providing essential mental health services to our diverse medical student population. They will assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of psychiatric disorders, using evidence-based therapeutic interventions and programs to promote wellness.

To fulfill these functions, the Clinical Psychiatrist is expected to have knowledge and experience in a broad range of evidence-based medical treatments for a broad range of psychiatric disorders. The psychiatrist position is an in-person, part-time position (two half-day sessions per week).

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:

The psychiatrist will not have supervisory authority.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Works collaboratively and professionally in a multidisciplinary setting. Interacts with students, staff and faculty within the College of Medicine and University Counseling services. Is a member of the team at the Howard University College of Medicine’s Center for Spiritual Health and Wellness.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments to identify students’ mental health needs, using a variety of methods such as interviews and psychometric tests.
  • Formulate individualized treatment plans for students, based on their unique needs, and update these plans as necessary throughout the course of treatment.
  • Provide evidence-based psychiatric treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy, or other relevant therapeutic modalities.
  • Coordinate care with the Director of the Wellness Center and the clinical psychologist.
  • Facilitate group therapy sessions, workshops, and wellness seminars as needed, on topics such as stress management, mindfulness, and coping with mental health issues.
  • Documents all patient care or other clinical activity appropriately and in a timely fashion in the Electronic Medical Record or approved medical record systems.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training activities to stay current with the latest advancements in the field of psychiatry.
  • Provide crisis intervention and management as necessary.
  • Develops, collaborates, or participates in clinical research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; to the extent possible.
  • Promotes adherence and actively participates in the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and the Health Sciences Standards of Conduct.
  • Attends annual and periodic mandatory Compliance Program training including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy training.
  • Participates in activities that promote adherence to federal healthcare program requirements.
  • Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains licensure status in DC and continuing education to maintain strong knowledge base within profession.
  • Evaluate clients’ emotional, behavioral and mental state through discussion, observation and analysis
  • Identify mental disorders and determine best treatments, inclusive of therapy, nutrition, stress management, and medications
  • Administer, Score and Analyze psychiatric tests and track clients’ progress
  • Coordinate with external healthcare professionals when hospitalization is required
  • Advise patients on how to cope with mental diseases and emotional breakdowns
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area.

CORE COMPETENCIES:   

  • Knowledge and experience in Clinical Psychiatry, including development, implementation, and supervision of clinical programs or services, and knowledge and experience in a broad range of evidence-based psychiatric treatments, assessments, and understanding of psychiatry standards and practices.
  • Understanding of clinical research methods and experience in clinical research.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment that follows ethical guidelines and College of Medicine procedures.
  • Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with residents, students, colleagues, staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials and employees, patients, family members, and the general public.
  • Must demonstrate collaboration; accountability; respect; excellence; and service.
  • Works with team members and peers in and outside of their immediate work group to create an exceptional experience for patients, students and other visitors; looks for ways to achieve departmental/institutional results by partnering.

  • Maintains licensure and registration for medical license, DEA and controlled substances.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Satisfactory completion of a Medical Doctorate (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) and a residency program in psychiatry.  
  • Board certification in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology
  • Active District of Columbia (D.C.) License to practice psychiatry
  • Active DEA and Controlled Substance licenses and registrations.
  • Four (4) years of responsible work experience in psychiatry.
  • A great bedside manner and the ability to remain calm, empathetic and patient while interacting with patients who suffer from severe mental disorders

Compliance Salary Range Disclosure

Expected Pay Range: $120 per hour
