Clinical Mentor

Main Purpose

The main objective of a clinical mentor is to oversee and ensure the facilitation, mentoring and implementation of the MSF Academy learning activities in the selected MSF projects in the country according to MSF’s protocols, standards and procedures to ensure the delivery of quality medical care for patients and their communities and to improve the health condition of the population. This entails ensuring collaboration with and appropriation by the project of the program.

Accountabilities

• ·         The clinical mentor directly prepares, organizes and delivers learning activities in the clinical areas and trains the learners in the MSF projects as part of a continuing education process with most of the working time in the ward, coaching and training at the bedside
  
•    Supports Healthcare Trainers in preparing and delivering learning activities (facilitation and clinical mentoring).
  
•   Supports the Healthcare Trainers in their professional development plans along with the Pedagogical Manager.
  
•   Improves and adapts training content, delivers and evaluates it with the support of the Pedagogical Manager
  
• Facilitates the training of facilitators (TOF) and training of clinical mentors (TOM) for healthcare trainers and learning companion
  
•  Monitors MSF Academy activities in the projects in line with the MEAL framework by also ensuring systematic documentation and reporting of learners’ progression, providing regular updates on performance and development
  
• Implements the MSF Academy evaluation tools (CGAs, Quality of Care audit and satisfaction surveys) with the support of the Pedagogical Manager
  
•  Acts as the focal point between the MSF Academy and the project ensuring effective communication support to best practice implementation, coordination with key stakeholders, proactive problem solving and maintenance of accurate programme records and databases
  
• Under the Pedagogical Manager’s supervision, carries out supply management on the project (orders, follow-up of the stock, storage conditions, inventories, consumption, etc.) for the training activities
  
• Maintains clinical practice with the support of the Pedagogical Manager
  
•  In close collaboration with the Nursing Science Referent and Coordinator and with their support, serve as the MSF Academy Focal Point within the project ensuring effective coordination, implementation, and follow-up of pedagogical activities.
  
•  Perform the pedagogical and technical rollout of the Basic Clinical Nursing Care (BCNC) curriculum within the project in close collaboration with the Healthcare Trainers.
  
•    Deliver high-quality facilitation, coaching, and mentoring sessions autonomously, applying adult learning principles and adhering to MSF Academy pedagogical standards.
  
• Lead actively contributes to program documentation, knowledge capitalization, monitoring, and reporting throughout the implementation cycle with an inclusive team centered approach
  
• Integrate effectively within the project's operational environment and uphold the reputation of the MSF Academy through exemplary professional conduct, ethical behavior, and constructive collaboration with project stakeholders.
  
• Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness in implementing orientations, priorities, and instructions provided by the MSF Academy Coordinator and Referents
  

Education

Essential

·       Diploma/Degree in Nursing/Midwifery/Clinical Officer/Medical Doctor

Desirable

·       Training as a trainer or any other certificate/diploma in pedagogy or education is an asset.

·       Any additional medical specialization is an asset, particularly Pediatrics/OT/Infectious diseases

Experience

Essential:

·       Relevant proven experience in mentoring, preceptorship (Diploma/ Certificate)

·       Experience in facilitation.

·       Five years of experience working in a hospital structure (if possible, in different services), and strong clinical supervision

Desirable:

·       Tutoring or MSF Academy Competency certificate in clinical mentoring

·       Previous experience facilitating training of clinical mentors’ facilitators, or training of trainers

·       Previous work experience with MSF or other international healthcare organisation is an asset.

Languages                         

Essential: English

Desirable: Swahili and Somali

Knowledge

Strong Clinical skills and knowledge on nursing care

Basic pedagogical knowledge

Computer literacy (word, excel, PPT and internet)
