Job Description:

  • Completes nutrition-focused physical assessments, takes measurements, reviews medical records, collects data via interviews, and evaluates anthropometric status.
  • Evaluates assessment data to identify nutrition risks, nutrition problems, criteria consistent with malnutrition, knowledge deficits, and high-risk health behaviors.
  • Offers nutrition interventions, orders, education, counseling, and referrals to other services.
  • May place feeding tubes or perform indirect calorimetry studies.
  • Provides counseling and education using evidence-based techniques that reflect appropriate health literacy and cultural sensitivity to patients with disease processes requiring nutritional management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Must be able to read, write, speak, and have good comprehension of conversational English [Required]
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office [Required]
• Comprehensive knowledge and application of nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy [Required]
• General knowledge of nutrient analysis, word processing, e-mail, and spreadsheet software [Required]
• Ability to search the web for nutrition research or practice updates and apply knowledge to updating reference materials, preparing for presentations, education, etc. [Required]
• Avails self to staff on units as the nutrition expert [Required]
• Performs Meal Test Trays 3 times per month (breakfast, lunch, dinner) [Required]
• Attends interdisciplinary meetings and rounds on assigned units as scheduled unless valid excuse demonstrated [Required]
• Assists in regulatory survey preparation when applicable [Required]
• Reviews and/or updates department resource/reference materials when applicable or required [Required]
• When confronted with barriers to meeting patient care standards, improves process by planning and implementing action steps [Required]
• Identifies specific patient or staff needs, initiates and develops educational or clinical materials then evaluates outcomes [Required]
• Assures that care delivered to each patient is in accordance with established standards [Required]
• Skill and knowledge in working with an electronic health record system [Required]
• Analyzes and interprets reliable assessment data to identify an actual occurrence, risk of, or potential for developing a nutrition problem [Required]
• Nutrition Diagnoses/Problems are included on the patient care plan and updated as more data becomes available, or signed off as applicable [Required]
• Provides appropriate intervention in accordance with the identified patient’s goals [Required]
• Identifies and follows through with potential complex discharge planning needs, intervenes early to promote timely attainment of goals [Required]
• Adheres to reassessment timeframe per standards [Required]
• Reassesses and updates nutrition care process and implement changes as indicated [Required]
• Complies with National Patient Safety Goals regarding abbreviation usage, patient identification [Required]
• Assessment, interventions and procedures utilizing equipment are appropriate for age group [Required]
• Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, problem-solving, and customer service skills [Required]
• Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, and support personnel [Required]
• Ability to work well with minimal supervision [Required]
• Ability to keep accurate and complete records [Required]
• Initiative to keep abreast of new information/products/developments in the field of Dietetics [Required]
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations as related to Dietetics practice [Required]
• Proficiency in the Nutrition Care Process of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics [Required]
• Proficiency in identifying and using comparative standards to estimate energy, fat, protein, carbohydrate, fiber, fluid, vitamin and mineral needs as well as recommended body weight, BMI, and desired growth patterns [Required]
• Ability to be flexible and willingness to adapt to changes as necessary [Required]
