The Clinical Charge Nurse RN is responsible for the organization, supervision, coordination, and daily operation of all nursing services in accordance with Federal, State, CMS, AAAHC, and facility policies and procedures. Collaborates with the Administrative Director to ensure clinical operations, regulatory compliance, patient safety, quality improvement, and infection prevention standards are maintained. Oversees patient care activities throughout the perioperative continuum while serving as the clinical resource for all nursing staff. Maintains competency to function in the Operating Room, Pre-Operative, and PACU as needed and provides direct patient care during staffing shortages or operational needs.


A. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:


Nursing Supervision

  • Supervises all nursing and clinical staff and provides daily clinical leadership.
  • Coordinates daily staffing assignments based on patient volume, acuity, and staff competency.
  • Collaborates with the Administrative Director regarding staffing, workflow, and clinical operations.
  • Provides direction, coaching, mentoring, and guidance to clinical staff.
  • Assists with orientation, training, competency validation, and annual evaluations.
  • Promotes teamwork, accountability, and professional development.
  • Maintains compliance with CMS, AAAHC, CDPH, OSHA, and facility policies.
  • Participates in performance improvement and disciplinary documentation when appropriate.
  • Serves as the clinical resource for physicians and staff.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Infection Prevention & Regulatory Compliance

  • Oversees the facility Infection Prevention Program.
  • Monitors infection surveillance and investigates trends.
  • Ensures compliance with infection prevention policies and standards.
  • Participates in CMS, AAAHC, CDPH, and other regulatory surveys.
  • Maintains continuous survey readiness.
  • Assists with policy development and annual review.
  • Conducts clinical audits and implements corrective actions.

Clinical Skills

  • Maintains competency in Pre-Operative, Operating Room, and PACU nursing.
  • Functions as Circulating RN and provides clinical coverage when needed.
  • Performs patient assessments and perioperative nursing care.
  • Provides safe medication administration.
  • Ensures compliance with Universal Protocol and Time-Out procedures.
  • Maintains sterile technique and patient safety standards.
  • Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts per policy.
  • Assures emergency equipment and supplies are readily available.
  • Responds to clinical emergencies and emergency transfers.
  • Demonstrates age-specific nursing care.
  • Oversees appropriate documentation of all clinical care.

Equipment Management

  • Demonstrates appropriate protocol for safe use and handling of equipment.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment.
  • Coordinates preventive maintenance.
  • Ensures crash cart and emergency equipment readiness.
  • Assures equipment is functioning properly before patient use.

Communication

  • Communicates effectively with physicians, staff, patients, and families.
  • Promotes professional, respectful communication.
  • Collaborates with the Administrative Director regarding clinical operations.
  • Utilizes interpreter services when appropriate.

Documentation

  • Oversees clinical documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Reviews medical records for compliance.
  • Ensures nursing documentation meets regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in quality audits.

Quality

  • Participates in the facility Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) Program.
  • Reviews incident reports and assists with investigations.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvement.
  • Supports patient safety initiatives.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises all licensed nursing personnel and clinical support staff.
  • Responsible for coordinating daily nursing operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining staff competencies, and promoting high-quality patient care in collaboration with the Administrative Director.
Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated pay range for this position is $65.00–$70.00 per hour, with actual compensation based on experience, licensure, skills, qualifications, and market factors.

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications/Education : 

  • Current, active RN license required
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; PALS preferred
  • Minimum of two years of recent outpatient Ambulatory Surgery Center experience
  • Minimum of two years of Operating Room circulating experience
  • Minimum of two years of Pre-Operative and PACU experience
  • Previous Charge Nurse, Lead Nurse, or supervisory experience preferred
  • Supervisory, charge, or management experience in an outpatient or inpatient surgery center preferred
  • CNOR or CNAMB certification preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, organizational, and leadership skills required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and electronic medical record (EMR) systems required
  • Bilingual in Armenian or Spanish a plus 

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Supervisory, charge, or management experience in an outpatient or inpatient Surgery Center
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, computer, and organizational skills
  • Current RN license
  • BLS certification
  • ACLS certification
  • CNOR or CNAMB certification
