Job Description:

Responsible for the calculation, issuance, negotiation, analysis, settlement of ship owners’ demurrage, ship owners’ ancillary expenses including ship owners claims on our time-chartered vessels, contractual demurrage and ancillaries on oil sales and purchase contracts. The purpose of this role is to minimize financial exposure, improve commercial performance through accurate and timely claim handling, settlement and recovery.
Main Responsibilities
• Work with charter parties, sales/purchase contracts and agreements, terminal clauses to assess demurrage liability
• Calculate and prepare claims by reviewing laytime statements, NORs, SOFs, pumping logs, and voyage documents to support or challenge claims
• Negotiate claims/settlements with counterparties including ship owners, oil companies, traders, terminals ensuring consistency with contracts, time logs and operators notes.
• Maintain and reconcile demurrage position; update and ensure accuracy in systems
• Work closely with internal stakeholders [ trading, operations, legal, finance, and shipping teams ] to ensure they are well updated on claims position and claims are settled fairly, accurately and in a timely manner
• Issue counterclaims or dispute unjustified claims in coordination with legal and commercial teams
• Monitor and flag potential claims early by tracking operational incidents, delays, and off-spec cargo
• Support audits by providing detailed claim documentation and history
• Maintain claim registers and track KPIs such as average settlement time, success rate on disputes, and open claim aging
• Ensure compliance with insurance terms, internal risk protocols, and applicable regulations
• Contribute to continuous improvement of claims processes and system automation
• Support pre-fixture risk assessment by highlighting historical demurrage and claims exposure on routes, vessels, or terminals
• Assist in insurance renewals by providing loss history and claim analytics
• Train junior staff or contribute to knowledge-sharing initiatives within the claims or risk team
Education
• Master's degree in Maritime, Legal, Business, Economics
Experience
• 5 to 6 years of experience in demurrage/claims
• Solid understanding of laytime calculation, industry standards and legal principles
• Proven negotiation experience with external counterparties
• Experience / exposure to claims, shipping and trade systems
• Microsoft Excel and document management
Skills
• Able to manage multiple tasks and complicated cases and counterparties simultaneously
• Supports process improvement initiatives

Skills Required
