The Systems Engineering Division (SED) provides unmatched experience in systems engineering to the U.S. government and to numerous public and private agencies, universities, nonprofit organizations, consortia, and commercial companies involved in the advanced application of space technology. From systems architecture development to system analysis and optimization, astrodynamics, orbital debris, navigation, failure analysis, mission assurance, cost and schedule assessment, and economic market analysis, SED exploits an incredibly broad array of engineering and business disciplines against a diverse and dynamic portfolio of programs and national challenges. The Astrodynamics Department core competencies include conceptual mission design, orbit selection, mission operations support, and multi-body dynamics.
The Astrodynamics Department is located within the Systems Analysis and Simulation Subdivision, Systems Engineering Division, Engineering Technology Group. The department has personnel in ABQ, AGO, CHA, and COS.
Work Location/Model: This is a full-time, on-site position in either Chantilly, VA or Colorado Springs, CO, with occasional telecommuting opportunities based on the needs and priorities of the organization.
What You'll Be Doing
Your technical leadership responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and individually contribute to projects which perform technical analyses and software development relating to multi-body dynamics and cislunar operations
  • Plan and conduct deep dives, trade studies, and assessments in cross-organizational teams to define and address customer needs


Your people management responsibilities will include:

  • Manage seven to ten engineers, scientists and interns responsible for the modeling and simulation of cislunar missions in support of NSG, SSG, DSG, and CSG program offices, and internal corporate initiatives.
  • Work in coordination with SASS department managers in all aspects of developing a high performing organization of cislunar dynamics analysts in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Provide technical and management leadership in the design, development, and validation of cislunar mission design.
  • Provide management support to the department and section staff in the areas of:
    • Business functions (e.g., capital/overhead budgets, resource allocations)
    • Obtaining and managing project assignments
    • Leading projects and department initiatives
    • Develop staff through formal and informal performance management
    • Participate in recruiting and hiring processes
    • Extensive interaction via technical working groups, briefings, and personal contact with engineers, managers, program office, contractors, government personnel, and Aerospace Senior Leadership
    • Conducting annual performance assessments, reviews, and goal setting for direct reports
    • Serve as a Local Employee Advocate (LEA) to act as a resource to staff whose direct manager is not local to them


What You Need to be Successful Cislunar and Multi-Body Dynamics Engineering Manager - Manager - Flight Mechanics
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, physics, mathematics or equivalent plus:

  • Minimum of five years of experience post-baccalaureate conferral date
  • Familiarity with principles of dynamics systems theory and n-body problems
  • Experience working with program office personnel representing NSG, SSG, DSG, and CSG systems.
  • Strong abilities in hiring, mentoring, training, and developing personnel
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and complete projects/assignments, learn new technical approaches, lead technical efforts, and interact with a broad range of organizations.
  • An active TS/SCI clearance

Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
