Summary Generated by Built In

Change.org is searching for a Chief of Staff to the CEO (VP level) to serve as a force-multiplier for our founder/CEO, Ben Rattray, by developing and executing on the operating system of the Executive office: translating strategy into action, ensuring strong communication and alignment across the organization, and helping to drive operational excellence, focus, and follow-through on the company’s most important priorities.

It’s a unique time to join Change.org. At a time when dissatisfaction with democracy globally is at an all-time high, we’re investing heavily in using AI to build the most powerful tools in the world to give people greater voice, while bringing people across the political spectrum together to identify shared solutions.

Our core petitions platform, used by more than 100 million people annually, is growing rapidly - and we are rebuilding it from the ground-up using new tools to turn anyone into a powerful civic leader on the issues they care about. And we will soon be launching an entirely new platform to identify the >80% of issues that most people agree on, locally and nationally, and to mobilize hundreds of millions of people to advocate for those common-ground solutions.

To realize this vision, we’re expanding the most talented team in the world at the intersection of technology and social impact - all focused every day on building healthier democracies globally.

Key Outcomes:

  • Act as a trusted extension of the CEO, making informed decisions, resolving blockers, and maintaining momentum across multiple workstreams when he’s unavailable.
  • Operationalize strategy, translate high-level goals into clear plans, processes, and communications for internal and external audiences.
  • Establish and maintain a clear operating rhythm for the CEO and executive team, ensuring prioritization, prep, and follow-through are consistent and effective.
  • Lead board and executive preparation, synthesize materials, ensure alignment, and strengthen the quality and clarity of communications.
  • Ensure structure and accountability in company operations by strengthening coordination and communication across the executive team.
  • Build trusted relationships across the organization, serving as an ambassador of the CEO and the leadership team.

The most important core competencies for the role are:

  • Operational Leadership & Execution: Designs and runs the systems and processes that keep the CEO’s office and exec team focused and excellently executing.
  • Executive Communication & Influence: Excellent writer and communicator; skilled at distilling complexity into clarity for internal and external audiences - including Board and funders.
  • Strategic Thinking & Judgment: Understands company priorities and can connect short-term execution to long-term goals; exercises sound judgment in situations with multiple, complex considerations.
  • Relationship Building & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Earns credibility quickly; able to build strong relationships with senior staff across all departments and foster alignment across teams.

Target experience:

  • 7–10+ years in operational, strategy, or executive leadership roles within a fast-paced organization.
  • Prior experience as a Chief of Staff, Head of Operations, Product leader, or Strategy/Execution lead preferred.
  • Demonstrated success supporting or partnering directly with a CEO and/or other senior executives, driving operational clarity and communications excellence.
  • Background in consulting or strategic planning is a plus, but must be paired with hands-on execution experience.
  • Proven ability to bring order and communication discipline to complex, dynamic environments.

What We Do

Change.org is the world’s largest tech platform for people-powered, social change. More than half a billion people across more than 196 countries use our technology-driven petition and campaign tools to speak up on issues they’re passionate about. Approximately 70,000 petitions are created and supported on our platform every month, with 1.7 million new people joining our global network of users every week. People on Change.org have powered tens of thousands of campaign victories worldwide, and more are winning every week.

Every day, our users collaborate to organize on local, national and global issues; hold corporations to account; and demand action from decision makers at the highest levels of government and business. Our platform is free to use, open to all, and completely independent because it’s funded by the people who use it. Our independence makes us a trusted resource for decision makers, who turn to the platform to hear from and respond to the communities they represent.

The nonprofit Change.org Foundation oversees both the Change.org Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), a wholly owned corporate subsidiary focused on technology, innovation and growth; and the Change.org charitable programs focused on empowering the most marginalized people and communities globally. This hybrid structure of two mutually supporting organizations enables us to combine the ambition and growth trajectory of a tech company with the mission-focused stewardship of a nonprofit.

As an organization, Change.org is committed to providing the tools, resources and support needed to empower anyone, anywhere to create the change they want to see.

We love serving our incredible users, and we love our staff too. We show it with competitive salaries, unlimited vacation, 18 weeks of parental leave, and a high impact, low-ego team that can’t wait to learn from you and teach you what they know.
