The purpose of the Chief Safety Officer is to lead and coordinate safety management systems across surface and underground operations, ensuring effective risk control, legal compliance and safe operational performance aligned to business requirements.

The role is accountable for implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of safety systems, enabling safe production and operational delivery.

Safety Management Systems & Execution

• Lead implementation of integrated safety and health management systems across surface and underground operations
• Ensure safety systems are effective, compliant and aligned to operational requirements
• Drive execution of safety plans and programmes to support production and project delivery
• Monitor and improve safety performance across all areas of the mine

Risk Management & Compliance

• Coordinate and lead risk assessments across operational and project environments
• Ensure compliance with MHSA, OHSA and applicable safety standards and legislation
• Develop and maintain safety procedures, standards and codes of practice
• Ensure legal compliance and support statutory safety requirements

Audits, Inspections & Assurance

• Lead and coordinate safety audits and inspection programmes across the mine
• Ensure audit schedules, systems and documentation are maintained and compliant
• Conduct internal and support external audits to ensure adherence to standards
• Maintain audit evidence, reporting systems and post-audit corrective actions

Incident Investigation & Reporting

• Lead investigation of serious and critical incidents
• Analyse incidents, identify root causes and implement corrective actions
• Ensure accurate reporting of safety performance and statistics
• Develop preventive action plans to reduce recurrence of incidents

Operational Integration & Support

• Support operations, engineering and project teams on safety-related matters
• Ensure safety requirements are embedded in operational and project planning
• Provide technical safety input into VUP, C&M and operational activities
• Align safety systems with production and operational delivery requirements

Safety Governance & Reporting

• Develop and maintain safety performance reporting systems and dashboards
• Ensure accurate and timely reporting to operational and statutory stakeholders
• Monitor safety KPIs and drive corrective actions where required
• Ensure alignment with group safety frameworks and audit requirements

Team Leadership & Capability

• Lead and manage safety officers and safety teams
• Ensure capability, competence and performance across safety function
• Drive a strong safety culture and disciplined execution
• Support training and development in safety and risk management

Stakeholder Engagement & External Interface

• Liaise with regulators and external stakeholders on safety compliance matters
• Provide guidance and advice to management and operational teams, including contractor partners on site
• Support alignment across SHE, engineering, mining and project teams
• Represent the operation on safety-related matters

• Grade 12 (essential)
• Degree or Diploma in Safety Management, Engineering or related field
• Safety management qualifications such as SAMTRAC, COMSOC or equivalent advantageous
• 8–10 years’ experience in mining, safety or operational environments
• Minimum 3 years’ supervisory or management experience in safety

Proven experience in:

• Safety management systems implementation
• Risk assessment and compliance
• Incident investigation and reporting
• Audit and inspection programmes
• Experience across surface and/or underground operations advantageous

Knowledge & Technical Skills

• Safety management systems and risk control processes
• Mining legislation including MHSA and OHSA
• Audit, inspection and compliance frameworks
• Incident investigation and root cause analysis
• Safety reporting systems and performance management

Technical skills:

• Risk identification and mitigation capability
• Safety system implementation and monitoring
• Incident investigation and analysis
• Data interpretation and safety performance reporting
