FOX43/WPMT is looking for an experienced, innovative Chief Meteorologist to lead our weather coverage across Central Pennsylvania.
Our next Chief Meteorologist will be a strong meteorologist, communicator and newsroom leader who understands what weather means to the people we serve — from winter storms and ice to severe thunderstorms, flooding, extreme heat and rapidly changing conditions. This person will lead a weather team that delivers accurate, compelling and useful information across FOX43 News, FOX43.com, FOX43+, streaming, mobile, social media and emerging platforms. This is a leadership position for someone who wants to own weather coverage, elevate our forecasting, develop meteorologists and help FOX43 continue to be the station Central Pennsylvania turns to when weather matters most. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable forecasting in the weather center, leading coverage during a major storm, appearing live in the field, engaging with viewers on social media and helping develop new ways to tell the weather story.
Responsibilities
Work closely with the News Director and newsroom leadership to develop and execute FOX43's overall weather strategy across broadcast, digital, streaming, mobile and social platforms.
Lead and oversee the FOX43 weather team, including scheduling, coaching, performance feedback and professional development.
Build a consistent, accurate and compelling weather presentation that serves viewers across York, Lancaster, Harrisburg, Lebanon, Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin and surrounding Central Pennsylvania communities.
Lead FOX43's coverage of severe and high-impact weather, including winter storms, ice, flooding, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, extreme heat and other significant weather events.
Develop weather coverage plans and communicate expectations to the newsroom before, during and after major weather events.
Be a visible and trusted weather authority for the FOX43 audience, particularly during disruptive or dangerous weather.
Create original weather content that goes beyond the forecast and helps viewers understand how weather affects their lives, families, commutes, schools, businesses and communities.
Expand the weather brand across FOX43+, streaming, FOX43.com, mobile, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and other social platforms.
Embrace emerging technology, data, graphics and forecasting tools to improve the way FOX43 tells the weather story.
Work with newsroom leaders and producers to ensure weather coverage is timely, accurate and appropriately prioritized across all platforms.
Recruit, hire, coach and develop meteorologists and other weather team members in partnership with the News Director.
Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation and continuous improvement within the weather team and newsroom.
Represent FOX43 at community events, station appearances, schools and other outreach opportunities.
Participate in breaking news and major-event coverage as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned by the News Director.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Meteorology or a related field.
AMS Seal or equivalent professional certification preferred.
At least 3-5 years of professional on-air meteorology experience, with significant experience covering severe or high-impact weather.
Demonstrated leadership, coaching or management experience preferred.
Strong on-camera, writing and communication skills.
Proven ability to make sound editorial decisions and remain calm and effective under pressure.
Strong understanding of multiplatform newsgathering and content production.
Experience using modern weather graphics, radar, forecasting and digital weather tools.
Strong social media skills and experience creating content for platforms including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and X.
Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours during significant weather events.
A passion for serving the Central Pennsylvania community and helping audiences understand not just what the weather will be, but what it means for them.
