This work includes but may not be limited to: managing engineering and API inspection personnel executing the mechanical integrity program, providing technical support to other departments including Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and EHS, and developing/improving departmental standards and practices.

The Chief Engineer is responsible for supervising the Mechanical Engineering group which provides technical support and expertise on fixed equipment design, maintenance, and mechanical integrity. This work includes but may not be limited to: managing engineering and API inspection personnel executing the mechanical integrity program, providing technical support to other departments including Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and EHS, and developing/improving departmental standards and practices.
Job Responsibilities:
- Supervise the Mechanical Engineering team consisting of company and contract personnel, including plant/mechanical engineers, direct & contract inspectors.
- Manage requests for evaluation of fixed equipment from the Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering Departments.
- Assign Mechanical Engineering resources as necessary to assist in the evaluation and replacement of equipment.
- Support the capital projects by identifying the need for fixed equipment replacement, providing mechanical support for front-end project development, assisting in the development and justification of capital requests, and providing technical support for the fabrication and installation of fixed equipment. Identify and implement improvements to the mechanical integrity program.
- Support the development of general Engineering Department processes and procedures.
- Assess, prioritize, and manage engineering work requests generated by stakeholders at the facility.
- Assign mechanical engineering resources as necessary to address these requests.
- Manage the assigned resources to assure that plant needs are met in a safe and reliable manner.
- Ensure engineering and inspection resources are available to support planned turnarounds and unplanned maintenance events.
- Ensure personnel certifications, as stipulated by individual codes and standards, are maintained.
- Support the corporate EHS Policy and Programs by incorporating the applicable requirements into Engineering programs.
- Continually evaluate ways to improve site safety.
- Coordinate with Operations, Maintenance, and EHS departments to ensure Engineering meets the end users’ needs, and remains in compliance with all laws, regulations, and standards related to the Engineering group.
- Be a company resource on API, ANSI, and ASME standards for fixed equipment fabrication, inspection, and repair.
- Supervise and ensure the development of employees to ensure their personal and career growth, as well as developing future leaders and subject matter experts for the company.
- Lead the continued development of the APM mechanical integrity software tool to improve the efficiency and record keeping aspects of the fixed equipment mechanical integrity program.
Job Requirements:
- B.S. degree in engineering from an ABET accredited university is required.
- A Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred.
- Ten or more years of engineering related experience in the oil, gas, or chemical manufacturing industry preferred.
- Extensive knowledge and experience with API, ASME codes for fixed equipment and piping fabrication, inspection and repair.
- Experience with ammonia or methanol processes is preferred.
- Five or more years of fixed equipment mechanical integrity experience required.
- Five or more years of hands-on, in-plant experience preferred.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) required.
- Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with personnel of all backgrounds.
- Louisiana Professional Engineer Registration preferred.
- Strong management skills required, including leadership, team building, team member development, critical decision making, and time management.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work at heights, and enter confined spaces is preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office software.
- Experience with mechanical integrity software system.
- Must possess and maintain Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC).
- The ability to prove drug and alcohol free at random or for cause.
