Chief Engineer
Lead technology strategy and engineering excellence at scale.
Shape digital experiences for customer service and assisted channels.
Build with modern cloud, AI and engineering platforms.
Do Work That Matters
We’re building tomorrow’s bank today, and we need creative, diverse and deeply technical Chief Engineers to help us redefine what customers and colleagues experience. CommBank’s Technology Strategy is centred on delivery primacy, future-ready technology and data, Agentic and GenAI at scale, and best-in-class security, resilience and reliability.
In this role, you’ll help shape the technology foundations that support our customer service, contact centre and collections experiences. You’ll operate across complex live environments, partner with product, architecture, risk and delivery leaders, and guide the design of scalable, secure and production-ready platforms that help our teams serve customers with confidence.
See yourself in our team
Retail Technology delivers technology and operations across every aspect of CommBank and Bankwest Retail, from customer product platforms to essential tools that support the business. You’ll be working in a domain focused on customer service, contact centre and collections experiences, where modern engineering helps frontline teams access the right information, reduce friction and deliver better outcomes.
Our Chief Engineers are deeply technical and hands‑on, operating across live, complex environments while influencing senior stakeholders to deliver safe, scalable and production‑ready data foundations.
You’ll be designing, building and deploying innovative tech solutions across software, systems, infra, network, platform and architecture engineering.
You’ll do this by:
Setting technical direction and driving a culture of engineering excellence, innovation and pragmatic delivery.
Owning architectural design, technology roadmap and delivery outcomes across complex, live technology environments.
Partnering across product, architecture, risk and delivery to deliver scalable, secure and resilient customer service technology.
Leading modernisation across legacy and future-state platforms, including reusable service domains, cloud-native architecture and platform patterns.
Driving engineering excellence through modern software development practices, CI/CD, observability, secure design and production readiness.
Providing thought leadership, mentoring senior engineers and uplifting technical capability across teams.
Influencing senior stakeholders and balancing speed, quality, customer outcomes, operational risk and technology resilience.
Helping build simpler, smarter and more reliable experiences for the colleagues who support our customers every day.
We’re interested in hearing from people who:
Are deeply technical, hands-on engineering leaders who have operated across large-scale, complex technology environments. You’ll bring strong architectural judgement, modern engineering experience and the ability to influence across product, risk, architecture and delivery to create safe, scalable and customer-focused outcomes.
Have led enterprise-scale technology environments, including architecture, engineering standards and end-to-end delivery.
Bring experience modernising complex platforms, including legacy transition, service domains, APIs, cloud or microservice-based architectures.
Understand the importance of reliability, observability, security, controls and operational risk in production environments.
Can guide solution design across complex problem spaces and support teams through architecture guardrails and standards.
Have experience working with modern software delivery practices, secure design, CI/CD and engineering quality at scale.
Are comfortable influencing senior stakeholders, making pragmatic trade-offs and communicating technical decisions clearly.
Are curious about the role AI, GenAI and Agentic platforms can play in improving colleague and customer experiences.
Care about mentoring others, building capability and creating an inclusive engineering culture.
