ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the director/coordinator, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Keeps accurate class attendance records.
  • Covers classes when not available to teach and willingness to sub for others when available. 
  • Notifies wellness director/coordinator of any changes to classes.
  • Reports to work at least 5 minutes prior to start of class to prepare room, music and thought for the day. 
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations. 
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training before working with consumers and on an annual basis.
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification, Yoga or Les Mills Certification.
  • Certification in areas of expertise.
  • At least one year of experience teaching group exercise classes preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of audio equipment. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to conduct classes and activities.
  • Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.

Skills Required

  • CPR, First Aid, AED certification
  • National group fitness certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise, Yoga, or Les Mills certification
  • Certification in areas of expertise
  • At least one year teaching group exercise classes
