Head of Backend - BeReal

We’re looking for a Head of Backend to lead a team of skilled backend engineers and help shape the architecture and technical direction of BeReal. As a Head of Backend, you’ll balance management and mentorship with hands-on contributions, ensuring engineering excellence and alignment across teams.

• Design scalable and robust backend architecture with the team to support our global user base and rapid growth.

• Lead and grow the backend chapter, setting technical direction and fostering a high-performance culture.

• Ensure sync across backend teams and collaborate with product squads to align on architectural decisions and best practices.

• Tackle technical challenges such as handling traffic spikes of millions of users in a short timeframe.

• Partner closely with product and engineering teams to deliver high-impact features with high quality.

• Conduct regular code and architecture reviews, and drive continuous improvement in development processes.

• Promote knowledge sharing and cross-team collaboration to maintain alignment on backend strategy.

• Infrastructure: GCP, Kubernetes, Pub/Sub, GitHub actions, and ArgoCD.

• Backend: Go, Node.js (NestJS, Nx, Typescript)

• Frontend: Swift (iOS), Kotlin (Android).

• Database: Spanner, PostgreSQL, Redis.

• You have 7+ years of experience in backend engineering, with at least 2 years in a technical leadership role.

• You have a proven experience in Go and contribute to developing high volume API microservices.

• You have experience guiding teams and driving alignment across engineering functions.

• You are passionate about clean architecture, scalability, and performance.

• You are self-motivated, organized, and comfortable working in fast-paced startup environments.

• You are fluent in English, and thrive in diverse international teams.

• You hold a Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
