 ABOUT THE LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Middlesex College invites applications for Chairperson of History and Social Sciences. This position offers an exceptional opportunity to lead a broad and intellectually vibrant department encompassing History, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Criminal Justice, and Education.
 

The Chairperson will lead an engaged group of full- and part-time faculty within a collaborative Liberal Arts division that welcomes thoughtful innovation, interdisciplinary partnerships, and new academic initiatives. Working closely with faculty and College leadership, the Chairperson will strengthen curriculum and programs, support faculty development, advance student learning and success, and cultivate productive relationships across the College and the wider community.

 GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

 

The Chairperson, History and Social Sciences performs managerial, professional work providing instructional leadership and administrative oversight for an array of disciplinary courses and programs at a comprehensive community college, including History, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Criminal Justice, and Education. Works collaboratively with faculty and staff and with the College’s administrative team to provide a high-quality learning environment for students.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  1. Establishes a collaborative working environment and fosters effective communications within the department, division, and campus. 
  2. Works in partnership with faculty members to develop best practices for curricula, programs, and related student services. 
  3. Assesses learning outcomes for courses, programs, and services and implements changes, where appropriate. 
  4. Works collaboratively with departmental faculty to develop and approve curriculum, select textbooks, implement new instructional and support materials, and assign courses. 
  5. Hires, supervises, and evaluates full- and part-time faculty and staff. 
  6. Develops reports and budget plans for the department. 
  7. Oversees grant proposals and implementation. 
  8. Participates actively on division and College committees, meetings, and public outreach efforts. 
  9. Provides professional development opportunities for faculty. 
  10. Develops and implements new opportunities for the College to focus on coursework essential for student success and degree attainment. 
  11. Performs other duties as assigned. 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Master’s degree in one of the departmental disciplines
  • Three (3) years’ experience teaching at the college level
  • Three (3) years’ administrative, supervisory and/or leadership experience at the post-secondary level 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office 
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Doctoral degree
  • Five (5) years’ experience teaching at the college level.

 


SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

 

SCHEDULE: Twelve (12)-month position, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 


RETIREMENT: Pension Eligible
