Job Summary:Job Summary
The Project Engineer – Hazardous Location supports the evaluation, testing, and certification of electrical and mechanical products intended for use in hazardous (classified) locations. The role involves assisting senior engineers with project coordination, standards compliance, documentation, and basic testing activities in accordance with ATEX, IECEx, and North American hazardous location requirements.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Support certification projects for hazardous location products.
- Assist senior engineers with planning, scheduling, and tracking project activities.
- Review basic engineering documents such as drawings, datasheets, and test records.
- Support laboratory and on-site testing activities and document test results.
- Prepare and maintain technical reports, checklists, and certification documents.
- Coordinate with internal teams such as engineering, quality, and testing laboratories.
- Communicate with customers and certification bodies under supervision.
- Support audits and quality assessments by preparing records and documentation.
- Follow company procedures and applicable safety and quality requirements.
Applicable Standards
The role requires knowledge of international safety and certification standards used for hazardous environments, such as ATEX and IECEx schemes, IEC / EN / UL standards for hazardous locations and Electrical installation and safety codes,
The engineer is expected to develop working knowledge of:
- IEC / EN / UL 60079 series (0, 1, 2, 7, 11, 15, 18, 31 – awareness level)
- IEC 60079-14 (installation – basic understanding)
- ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU – overview)
- IECEx Scheme (overview)
- NFPA 70 (NEC)
Minimum Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
Experience
- 3 years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Hazardous location products
- Electrical product testing or certification
- Industrial equipment design, testing, or compliance
- Quality, inspection, or regulatory engineering
Required Technical Skills
- Basic understanding of electrical equipment and industrial products.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and schematics.
- Familiarity with laboratory testing concepts and documentation practices.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and basic report writing.
Soft Skills & Competencies
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
- Willingness to learn complex international standards and regulations.
- Good communication skills (written and verbal).
- Ability to work in a team-based, compliance-driven environment.
- Organized and capable of handling multiple tasks under supervision.
Preferred Skills
- Exposure to hazardous area classification or explosion protection concepts.
- Project management related to ATEX, IECEx, or UL compliance.
- Knowledge of quality systems (ISO 9001).
