Category Lead - Metallics

Charter Steel is hiring a Category Lead on the Supply Chain & Metallics team!

This role is responsible for overseeing the sourcing and procurement of raw materials, with a primary focus on maintaining and optimizing existing supplier accounts within the traditional Scrap Yard channel and, at times, working with Scrap brokers. Additionally, the Category Lead will contribute to business development efforts to expand supplier networks and increase material supply.

Position structure:

• Location: Saukville, WI or Cleveland, OH
• Hybrid flexibility: 3 days a week in office, 2 days remote

What you'll need:

• Bachelor’s degree in business or related field.
• Strong track record of success with at least 5 years of commercial experience in ferrous or non-ferrous metals or similar industrial material acquisition
• Strong ability to develop and maintain relationships
• Ability to travel at least 50%
• Ability to understand material processing at supplier and Charter locations
• A strategic mindset with the ability to execute within an everchanging market
• Can lead by influence
• Ability to put strategy into execution
• Overall business acumen, demonstrating an ability to combine commercial, operations, economics and supply chain understanding to maximize business opportunities
• Excellent negotiation skills
• Demonstrated ability to work independently
• Excellent communication skills: verbal, written, presentation, analytical, interpersonal, leadership
• Results-oriented mindset
• Proven ability of working effectively with cross-functional teams, particularly Operations, Supply Chain, and Finance
• Solid computer skills, including Microsoft products

Preferred experience:

• Scrap metal purchasing experience with background working directly with scrap yards, as well as brokers, and for a metals manufacturer with melting operations.
• Experience in a team environment with downstream stakeholders.

What you'll focus on:

• Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships, externally across supply base and internally with partner departments.  External relationship building primarily requires regular contact and site visits.  Internal relationship building requires effective communication with partner Charter departments, Operations, Supply Chain and Finance.
• Territory Planning and Management: Assist in the development and execution of market penetration and optimization strategy.  This includes (1) maximizing the quantity of commercially viable suppliers, and (2) maximizing the amount of economically viable scrap available to Charter’s mill.
• Account Strategy and Market Depth: Build an understanding of scrap generation and supplier processing capabilities, value drivers, selling criteria, and counterparty options (NBA - next best alternative).  Leverage this understanding to maximize business advantage to achieve short-term and long-term goals.
• Acquisition: Participate in volume and price negotiations with supply base.
• Competitive Intelligence: Develop and maintain knowledge base of suppliers’ and competitors’ industry position, capabilities, and offerings.
• New Account Development:  Periodic identification and development of new suppliers that enter the Scrap Yard channel.
