The Keck School of Medicine is seeking a Career Services Advisor to provide comprehensive career advising to medical students, particularly those in their fourth year preparing for residency. This role supports students in exploring medical specialty options, setting career goals, and enhancing their competitiveness for residency programs. Key responsibilities include individual and group advising, developing and facilitating workshops, coordinating faculty advisor involvement, and creating career-related resources. The advisor works collaboratively with the Assistant Dean for Career Advising ensuring successful career outcomes for students. This position offers a hybrid schedule, with three days on campus and two days remote each week. Responsibilities include:

  • Provides counseling to a caseload of medical students on career development and student support services. Monitors compliance of required activities and makes referrals to Student Affairs leadership as appropriate. Counsels medical students in exploring their fit for different specialties and accurately assess their competitiveness for their selected specialties locally, regionally and nationally using established metrics.
  • Tracks student specialty interest and ultimate career choice during medical school. Reviews and advises students on results for AAMC career assessments. Interprets and presents on national reports from NRMP, AAMC, and other national organizations regarding medical specialty information.
  • Prepares the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) and provides support during the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) for unmatched students. Supports students' applications for away electives using the VSLO and host school application platforms. Support students with the development of CVs and personal statements.
  • Advises students on completing degree requirements and conducts degree audits.
  • Collaborates with department specialty advisors to support students through the residency application process. Tracks the touchpoints, activities, and engagement of faculty career advisors with medical students.
  • Assists the Student Affairs team with major events and activities including orientation, Match Day, and commencement.
  • Develops presentations and reports for students, staff, and faculty.
  • Develops and updates content for career advising publications, resources, and website.

The hourly rate range for this position is $31.80 - $34.87. Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree In Counseling Or Higher Education Or Human Resources Or in related field(s)
Minimum Experience: 1 year in career services, human resources, recruiting, or a related field.
Minimum Skills: Advanced knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market trends, and occupational, career, and employment information sources. Superior level of professionalism, exceptional attention to detail, and excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. Proven business savvy, the ability to deliver quality services, and passion as it relates to impact on outcomes. Demonstrated experience interacting with various groups, exercising diplomacy, good judgment, and discretion.
Preferred Experience: 2 years in career services, human resources, recruiting, or a related field.
Preferred Skills: Leadership and guidance skills with the ability to manage, balance, and prioritize different tasks and projects. Experience with federal and international immigration employment regulations and procedures as it relates to non-immigrant visas, permanent-residency sponsorship, and the hiring of foreign nationals in the U.S. Working knowledge of California and multi-state employment law. Experience working with international students, faculty, and/or staff in higher education, and familiarity with academic medical center environments. Understanding of employment issues affecting various groups, (e.g., wage gaps). Fluency in Spanish, American Sign Language (ASL), or other languages in addition to English. Demonstrated experience with office management communication software and tools, (e.g., Google suite, Slack, Skype), and social media management. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite software. Demonstrated experience managing multi-platform communications and marketing plans involving publications, videos, websites, social media, and public speeches and presentations.
