POSITION SUMMARY:

The Capital Management internship will provide exposure to how a leading U.S. life and annuity insurer evaluates current and projected capital needs, understanding the drivers of changes in capital and risk-based capital ratios, and provide insight into potential capital impacts from business activities, investment decisions, reinsurance deals, and regulatory developments. The intern will collaborate cross-functionally across Finance, Accounting, Actuarial, Risk Management, Investments, and other corporate teams.

The Capital Management Intern will support the company’s efforts to monitor, analyze, forecast, and manage its financial strength, capital position, and risks by assisting with updating and validating capital models, analyzing and forecasting changes in regulatory and rating-agency capital, and understanding and communicating capital implications for the company, in addition to activities such as process improvements and documentation activities.

This position currently offers an onsite work schedule, with the expectation that you will be in the office four (4) days per week during onsite core days.  Our current onsite core days are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  The work schedule type and core days are subject to change with advance notification and manager discretion.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Update capital analysis on a quarterly and as-needed basis, including data population, error resolution, interpreting results, and preparing presentation materials
  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly Risk-Based Capital (“RBC”) calculation and attribution analysis, including validating and summarizing results
  • Perform impact analysis of proposed regulatory capital changes for RBC and S&P model
  • Collaborate with internal partners to perform assigned duties
  • Improve efficiency of working files and processes
  • Document capital management processes and procedures
  • Perform ad hoc analysis and provide support for capital management activities, responsibilities and communications
  • All other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Pursuing degree in Finance, Actuarial Studies, Math, or a similar quantitative field
  • Experience with gathering, organizing, cleaning, and interpreting information (e.g. data sets)
  • Working exposure with relational databases (e.g. Microsoft SQL, Access) and writing queries
  • Working exposure using Analytical and Visualization tools, specifically Tableau & Alteryx
  • Ability to translate business needs into effective analytical solutions and models
  • Understanding of foundational financial principles, e.g. interest rates, investments, and financial statements (e.g. balance sheet)
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced finance environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines for recurring reporting and analysis
  • Ability to quickly develop professional relationships with others and effectively communicate using various platforms or methods
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, e.g. Excel

Base Pay Range.  The base pay range for this position is the range National Life reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for the position taking into account the wide variety of factors, including: prior experience and job-related knowledge; education, training and certificates; current business needs; and market factors.  The final salary or hourly wages offered may be outside of this range based on other reasons and individual circumstances.

Additional Compensation and Benefits. The total compensation package for this position may also include a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. The successful candidate may also be eligible to participate in National Life’s discretionary annual incentive programs, subject to the rules governing such programs. If hired, the employee will be in an "at-will position" and National Life reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
