The Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate’s mission is to support the science and technology and environmental restoration missions of the Laboratory by providing a safe, environmentally sound, and reliable infrastructure, to provide high quality crafts and fabrication services to our customers as needed and to protect people, property, and national security.

F&O’s Production Division provides mechanical, architectural, and civil services to build, support and maintain the Lab's infrastructure. The Cabinet Shop operates within the Architectural Services area.

Position Description:

The Production Division within the Facilities and Operations Directorate has an opportunity to fill the position of Cabinet Maker. Under minimum supervision, the Cabinet Maker lays out, constructs, modifies and maintains furniture, laboratory equipment and buildings, and component parts. Works with wood, wood substitutes and combination materials and flooring, roofing and wall materials. Uses hand, portable and fixed tools common to build construction and cabinet making trade. Works from prints, rough sketches and verbal instructions. Requires broad shop skills to perform difficult operations requiring ingenuity in complex jobs where previous standards or methods of operation do not offer complete solutions. May perform Carpenter duties as required.

The employee will be assigned to the day shift M-F 8am-4:30pm. This position reports to the General and Shop Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Measure, cut and assemble wood and other material to build cabinets, shelving and custom furniture.
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, and design specifications to ensure accurate and precise construction.
  • Safely and efficiently operate woodworking machinery and power tools, including table saws, routers, sanders, drills and other equipment.
  • Install cabinets and fixtures in laboratory, office, and other designated spaces.
  • Repair, restore, or finish damaged cabinets and woodwork.
  • Fabricate custom items such as shipping crates, timecard racks, work benches, and other specialized shop or site components.
  • Install, reconfigure, and mount various fixtures and workplace items, including office furniture, casework, shelving, signage, TV/monitor mounts, whiteboards, cork boards, and similar equipment.
  • Inspect materials for quality and verify accurate dimensions prior to use.
  • Sand, stain and finish wood surfaces to meet design requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace to ensure efficiency and compliance.
  • Collaborate with team members, supervisors, contractors, and designers to coordinate work activities, clarify project requirements, and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Load, transport and unload materials or finished products to job sites.
  • Follow all safety procedures and use appropriate protective equipment when operating tools and machinery.
  • Perform routine maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Ensure all work meets applicable building codes, safety regulations, and quality standards.
  • Keep accurate records of material used and work completed.
  • Troubleshoot construction or installation issues on-site.
  • Assist with design modification based on request or site conditions.
  • May perform Carpenter duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High School diploma or GED plus one of the following:
    • 6 years total experience composed of 4-year apprenticeship plus 2 years of experience; OR
    • 6-8 years total experience consisting of formal trade school plus a minimum of 2 years of experience; OR
    • 8 years of experience with no formal training.
  • Possess practical knowledge of trade.
  • Ability to lay out framing, flooring, dropped ceilings, and staircase projects with limited instruction.
  • Ability to read and interpret floor plans, blueprints, elevations, and shop drawings.
  • Experience with maintenance and repairs.
  • Solid measurement, math, and layout skills.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of cabinetmaking tools, equipment, and woodworking materials.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of the OSHA regulations related to building construction.
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills including:
    • Ability to read, interpret, and follow written instructions - including procedures, work orders, and related documentation.
    • Ability to accurately complete written documentation, including work orders, reports, and other required records.
    • Ability to coordinate with customers, team members, and management.
  • Possess a valid NYS driver's license.  
  • Must maintain a reliable phone contact and provide a valid telephone number for work-related communication purposes.

Environmental, Health, and Safety Requirement: 

Must meet physical requirements of the position, including but not limited to:

  • Standing, bending and lifting.
  • Ability to do heavy lifting > 30 lbs.
  • Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders.
  • Able to work outdoors/cold and warm environments.
  • Ability to work with and around moving machinery.
  • Have physical coordination, dexterity and balance.
  • Able to use power and hand operated hand-tools.
  • Able to operate fork trucks.
  • Able to use a respirator and other related safety equipment.
  • Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection.

Other information:

The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.

The Lab’s placement policy is to select the best qualified candidate for an available position.  With respect to Bargaining Unit positions, candidates are considered in the following order: (1) present benefits-eligible employees within the department/division and/or appropriate bargaining unit, with preference for those within the immediate work group; (2) present benefits-eligible employees within the Laboratory; and (3) outside applicants. The starting salary for this position is $42.41 per hour.
