The University of Maryland, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is seeking a Business Services Specialist to coordinate the procurement and payables for the research, instructional and shared instrumentation laboratories.
Key Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the Finance Director, the position will provide business services to an assigned group of faculty or a research support facility.
*Prepares and processes purchase requisitions and purchase orders for researchers via departmental requisition system and/or workday.
*Processes journal vouchers
*Monitors outstanding invoices and processes for payment
*Monitors outstanding encumbrances and follows through to completion
*Creates and/or assists department members with travel activities via CONCUR
*Assist with the processing of Internal billing for ChemStores and shared instrumentation facilities
* Assist with Account reconciliations
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sedentary work. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as — viewing a computer terminal — extensive reading. Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment. Must have the ability to traverse short distances on campus to pick up or deliver materials. Occasional lifting of boxes not to exceed 25 lbs.

The mission of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Maryland is to conduct world-class,
cutting-edge research in the chemical sciences while delivering the highest quality of education to
undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral associates. Our research and education programs span the traditional chemistry areas of analytical, inorganic, organic, physical chemistry and biochemistry, and include visionary programs in chemical biology, materials chemistry, theoretical chemistry, and nanotechnology. Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE: Six years progressively responsible experience in a combination of budgeting, accounting, payroll, purchasing, and personnel work.

OTHER:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of and ability to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Working knowledge of management principles and practices. Skill in applying basic analytical skills to review expenditures and revenues, prepare forecasts, and reconcile accounts. Skill in performing basic mathematical computations. Skill in planning work and supervising others. Skill in organizing and executing multiple assignments under specific time constraints. Ability to understand and interpret University policies and procedures in the areas of finance, human resources, payroll, purchasing, and sponsored programs. Ability to prepare and present budgetary, accounting, and other reports and schedules. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to operate office equipment, computers, and related software. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.

OTHER:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
