We are looking for a talented, enthusiastic senior writer to join our business team permanently starting in September. 

You are someone who lives in social and digital spaces and is hungry to tell stories to these audiences. You are passionate about business news and full of ideas about what stories to cover and how to best tell them in a way that makes sense to our digital audiences. 

Whether the story involves trade disputes or the latest consumer trends, you understand the economic forces behind the news and can distill ideas into clear, compelling narratives.

As a senior writer, you will pitch original stories and move fast on breaking news. You have strong writing, research, and interviewing skills and work well in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment. You are confident working with text, audio and video in all the spaces that touch our mobile audiences. 

You have a list of business sources and an understanding of how to pitch stories that will appeal to the young, diverse audience that is our target demographic. You are hungry to file. 

We are asking that candidates have at least 5 years of relevant experience. 

This job is 5 days a week, full-time, with an ability to work overtime or weekends as required. 

The successful candidate could be based in Toronto but we would consider applicants from other parts of Canada if they can work at a CBC station that can operationally support video work. This job cannot be done from home.

Key tasks:

  • Pitch stories on the economy, cost of living and challenges facing Canadians.   

  • Have strong breaking news skills –  file into live story pages and publish breaking news stories quickly and accurately. 

  • Be comfortable covering major or fast-moving events such as tariff announcements, AI advancements, interest rate decisions, and consumer reports.

  • Research, interview and gather new information

  • Pitch and shape stories with our target 30-49 diverse Canadian audience in mind. Drive to develop content that will be relevant to this demographic. Make business stories relatable to a general audience and explain the impact these stories have on people’s everyday lives.

  • Write stories that will work for a mobile audience – as text files or live page entries. Be comfortable generating stories in video and audio as needed for our mobile/social audiences. 

  • Generate and execute journalism that elevates a range of voices and perspectives

  • Work collaboratively with editors and vettors to sharpen writing, headlines and text.

  • Understand the elements needed to produce strong visual and audio stories. 

  • Be able to remain calm under pressure.

  • Recognize issues of importance quickly and take effective action to ensure appropriate coverage.

  • Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources.

  • Have a strong understanding of legal journalistic issues and the ethical principles of our Journalistics Standards and Practices. 

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues on the business team and other parts of the CBC.

Your profile:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. 

  • Minimum 5 years relevant full-time experience. 

  • Excellent understanding of the economic, business, and consumer challenges. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the diversity within the business beat and the diversity of our target audience.

  • Come with sources and contacts in the business community and beyond.

  • Experience writing, researching, fact-checking and packaging text, audio and video pieces.

  • Have deep familiarity with social media and have an ability to surface trending stories.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team and across departments.

  • Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment.

  • Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to work flexible hours and do overtime as needed.

  • Knowledge of the public broadcaster's role, responsibilities and journalistic standards.
