Job Description SummaryThe Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences (HESP) within the College of Behavioral and
Social Sciences (BSOS) at the University of Maryland is a nationally recognized academic and
clinical unit dedicated to advancing the science and practice of communication and hearing.
The department offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs in audiology and
speech-language pathology, preparing students for professional practice, research, and
leadership in the field.
Reporting to the Director of Administrative Services, the Business Manager serves as a key administrative and financial leader within the department, providing oversight of payroll, financial operations, sponsored research administration, and student financial processes. This position exercises independent judgment in managing complex fiscal and human resource functions to ensure compliance with university policies, sponsor regulations, and provides strategic operational support to enhance departmental efficiency. The Business Manager also serves as a key liaison with central university offices and ensures efficient management of departmental resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Three (3) years of professional human resources, payroll, finance, accounting, procurement, or travel coordination experience.
Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of human resources policies and procedures, and federal, state, and other applicable human resources related laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.

Additional Job Details

Preferences:

Knowledge of University of Maryland software systems (e.g., Workday, CONCUR). Familiarity with University personnel, payroll, and Graduate School policies and procedures. Sound judgement, attention to detail, and ability to provide excellent customer service to individuals from diverse, multicultural backgrounds. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision. Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and frequent interruptions.
