Breast Imaging Specialists provide mammography screenings, diagnostic and interventional procedures, and patient care services at defined levels to patients. They explain the procedure to patients, position and immobilize the patient’s breast in the unit, and observe the scanning process. This involves monitoring the video display of the area being scanned and adjusting the density or contrast to improve picture quality. Breast Imaging Specialists then review and evaluate the film or image recording plate to determine if the images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. Throughout this whole process, they use radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure the safety of patients and staff. By taking on this role, you will have a direct impact on patients by providing a good experience to them during their exam.
A caregiver in this position works days from 7:30AM – 4:00PM or 8:00AM – 4:30PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Review mammography/ultrasound requisition and computer exam forms to determine the type of exam required.
Accurately position patients, determine the exposure factors and operate mammography and ultrasound equipment according to established procedures to obtain a high-quality image.
Review processed images to determine quality and the need for additional images.
Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment and the exam to ensure understanding and cooperation.
Ensure patients' safety and comfort during and after the exam.
Acquire, archive, transmit and print images via CAD and PACS.
Complete after-hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork.
Report any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator.
Processes billing via RIS.
Assist with all policies and procedures required by local, state, and federal law, and with compliance or credentialing bodies (ACR, MQSA, Medicare, Medicaid, FDA, etc.).
Assist with instrument calibration and records to ensure compliance with quality assurance requirements.
Perform equipment checks to ensure proper function of and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions.
Ensure exam rooms are adequately supplied with linen and related medical supplies.
Provide teaching and mentoring to new hires and students.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate of an accredited school of Radiologic Technology
Registered Technologist credentialed by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists R.T.(R) (ARRT), in good standing
Certification in Mammography AND Breast Sonography: R.T.(R) (M) (BS) (ARRT)
Current state licensure (RL)
Two years of experience as a General Mammography Technologist
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Knowledge of anatomy and related pathologic processes as it relates to mammography and sonography
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
