Job Summary Repairs, modifies, inspects patient care equipment used in most areas of the hospital. Other duties include technical assistance in the clinical setting; education of users of equipment; hazard alert and recall resolution, special projects relating to major installations of equipment, pre-purchase evaluations, oversight of vendor services, and assistance with budget preparations. Essential Functions - Performs and improves inspections of patient care equipment and systems verifying proper function, accuracy and safety to meet accreditation standards, enhance patient care and reduce related hospital liability. - Repairs a wide variety of patient care equipment and systems maximizing equipment performance, safety, availability and minimizing the cost of repair. Troubleshoots logically and demonstrates a multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving. Uses test equipment knowledgeably. Demonstrates mechanical skill. - Orders parts and supplies accurately and timely to expedite repairs and maintain stock levels. Follows established purchasing policies and guidelines. Ensures accuracy of documentation related to purchases. - Completes work in a timely manner meeting all deadlines while maintaining an acceptable balance of quality and productivity. Submits documentation of work that is thorough and error-free. - Solves patient care equipment and systems problems directly in the clinical setting which require immediate resolution or which are related to the environment or interaction with other devices. Responds immediately to emergency calls assessing appropriately the need for assistance. - Effectively communicates with equipment users. Accurately and clearly explains equipment operation to users as needed. Notifies appropriate personnel upon removal and return of equipment. Informs users of pertinent problems, new products, evaluations, and incidents. - Oversees performance of services provided by manufacturers and third party service providers (both on contract and on an as needed basis) ensuring compliance with contracts, timely service, appropriate documentation, and appropriate billing. - Responds to hazard alerts and recalls in a timely manner and documents all response actions within established reporting systems. - Assists in the preparation of capital equipment and operating expense budgets as directed by obtaining and reviewing equipment quotes and providing estimates of maintenance expenses for selected items. - Performs services at off-site CHHS locations and outside fee-for-service customer locations. Education: - Associate's Degree Knowledge of analog and digital electronics, electricity, physics, chemistry, physiology, and medical devices normally acquired through completion of the requirements of an Associate Degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology Required Experience: - 1+ years successful experience as an Electronics Technician. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Ability to read, comprehend, interpret, and apply to specific devices, brief technical procedures in order to properly and thoroughly carry out periodic equipment inspections with minimal supervision. - Ability to use test equipment, read and comprehend technical manuals and schematics, and proceed in a logical fashion in order to determine equipment problems. - Manual dexterity and knowledge of techniques needed to perform mechanical and electrical repairs of equipment. - Good Interpersonal skills needed to communicate effectively with a variety of health care professionals. - Ability to walk, occasionally lift heavy equipment and climb to ceiling height in the course of performing duties.
