Cycles of Change is hiring a part-time educator for our in-school and after-school programs.

Cycles of Change is a 24 year old, PoC-run collective non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of East Bay residents by providing bicycle education and services for youth and adults. Our educators co-teach bike safety courses to classes of 15 to 50 students covering basics of safety and mechanics and the rules of the road. About You

Cycles Of Change seeks energetic, flexible, and organized individuals with strong communication and group management skills to float between our education programs! We are looking for someone who shares our deep commitment to racial, gender, economic, disability, and environmental justice. Ideal candidates would have: experience leading lessons for youth; passion for engaging, equitable, and effective teaching; initiative, persistence, and flexible problem solving sensibilities. 


Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Teach our curriculum in the classroom, on the blacktop, or on the road.

  • Prepare and practice lesson plans before the day of instruction

  • Create and maintain a safe and supportive space for young people 

  • Read and respond to coordinator communication in a timely manner

  • Stay up-to-date on curriculum and logistical information

  • De-escalate emergencies and administer first aid if necessary

  • Haul bicycle fleets and equipment from storage sites to school sites during in-person sessions and make basic repairs like flats, cables, etc.

  • Positively represent program to staff and school communities

  • Organize and maintain program materials as needed

Desired Qualities

  • 2+ years of experience working with youth of color and/or diverse populations, preferably in East Bay schools

  • A solid understanding and practice of bicycle commuting, safety, and mechanics 

  • The ability to speak loudly for prolonged amounts of time indoors and outdoors

  • The ability to stand or bike (8-10 miles) for long periods of time and lift 30 pounds

  • Ability to give and receive constructive criticism, and practice active listening 

  • High level of cultural competency, and demonstrated commitment to anti-oppression work 

  • Experience or interest working within a collective setting 

  • Good internet connection capable of running Zoom, computer or tablet for teaching

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule

  • Proficient communication in Spanish is a plus

This position receives support from Lead Educators and Program Coordinators.

Additional opportunities to participate in Cycles of Change work may be available, particularly for people who have skills and experience in fundraising, finance, outreach, public relations, human resources, and/or volunteer coordination. 

Compensation: $25.96 / hour to start.

This is a part-time variable position that runs primarily on the academic calendar. Most shifts will be scheduled during the school day with occasional evenings and weekends. Opportunity for advancement is possible, as well as opportunity to work additional hours with Cycle’s Bike Clubs programs.
Expected hours range from 10-25 hours per week.
