Primary Purpose:

Performs professional duties and assignments within the benefits administration function of Human Resources. Provides technical assistance to departments and employees and makes policy and procedure recommendations to administrative human resource staff. Recommends modifications to benefits programs. May assist with carrier and insurance company negotiations. Designs processes that support and promote company benefits.

Essential Functions:

Assist employees with benefits questions, problems, and changes. 

Interface with the insurance companies and the employee to solve claim and membership problems. 

Plan and coordinate the benefit portion of New Employee Orientation. 

Plans and organizes open enrollment each year, including coordinating with vendors for the benefits fair and working with marketing to effectively communicate open enrollment deadlines to internal employees. 

Assist new employees in the benefits enrollment process. 

Process monthly insurance billings in a timely and accurate manner. 

Coordinate COBRA benefits and ensure compliance. 

May assist Leave Administrator with process leaves of absence requests in accordance with ARUP policy and legal guidelines. Facilitate appropriate communication with the employee and supervisor. 

Assist employees in applying for long term disability when necessary. 

Assist in analyzing benefit plans and costs. 

Maintain confidential employee information, correspondence, and documents necessary for compliance with benefit plan regulations. 

Coordinate ongoing training for employees regarding the ARUP benefit package. 

Compose letters and memoranda to explain and communicate employee benefits. 

Recommend company and community resources to employees in need. 

Process life insurance claims and work with bereaved family members. 

Assist in maintaining compliance with applicable federal and state regulations including ACA, HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA, and other employee benefits laws. 

Maintain accurate employee benefits records within HRIS and vendor systems; audit and reconcile data to ensure accuracy. 

Partner with Payroll to ensure accurate processing of employee benefit deductions and employer contributions. 

Serve as liaison between employees, vendors, brokers, and insurance carriers to resolve service issues and support benefit program administration. 

Assist with promotion and administration of employee wellness, well-being, and Employee Assistance Program initiatives. 

Prepare reports and analyze benefits utilization, enrollment data, and program costs to support decision making. 

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and ability to learn and effectively use HRIS and benefits administration systems. 

Maintain electronic employee benefits records and documentation in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements. 

Other duties as assigned. 

Physical and Other Requirements:

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. 

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. 

Communicate: Frequently and effectively communicate with others. 

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.  

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures. 

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.   

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling. 

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.


Qualifications Education Required High School Diploma or Equivalent or better. Preferred Associates Degree or better. Bachelor's Degree or better. Experience Required Or High school diploma or equivalent and four years Human Resources experience, Preferred Or Associates degree and two years of Human Resources experience One year of benefits /insurance billings or equivalent experience Previous experience as a Benefits Administrator Previous experience as a Benefits Administrator Intermediate word processing and spreadsheet computer skills Excellent written/verbal communication and organizational skills Strong presentation/public speaking skills Equal Opportunity Employer/Protected Veterans/Individuals with Disabilities

Skills Required

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Four years of Human Resources experience
  • One year of benefits/insurance billings or equivalent experience
  • Previous experience as a Benefits Administrator
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to learn and use HRIS and benefits administration systems
  • Intermediate word processing and spreadsheet computer skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills
  • Strong presentation/public speaking skills
  • Knowledge of federal and state benefits regulations (ACA, HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA)
  • Associates Degree or better
