The Wonderful Company now wishes to expand its investments in Fiji by diversifying into agriculture, specifically citrus and papaya, as well as beekeeping education.
Job DescriptionThe Beekeeper will use independent judgement to make decisions on procedures and practices for specific work situations. The candidate will monitor hives at model farms including inspection, identification, reporting and monitoring of colonies. Beekeeper will also provide technical support to local beekeepers Travel will be required to monitor hives at both locations and provide training.
- Leverage Wonderful Company subject matter experts to advise on implementation
- Establish two model farms, set goals, track progress of activities and forecast projected completion dates, including hive growth and honey production
- Perform daily beekeeping activities including:
- Evaluate hives to ensure bee colonies are healthy and productive
- Inspect colonies and identify parasites and diseases, report and monitor hive health issues
- Identify queenless hives and know the difference between virgin/mated queens
- Ensure colonies have sufficient food reserves
- Honey extraction and processing
- Provide technical support to local beekeepers
- Identify local forage for optimum honey production
- Coordinate and negotiate with external suppliers, contractors, and vendors for hive inputs and equipment needs.
- Develop, manage, maintain budgets; review any cost variances to the budget
- Support the organization in meeting its long- and short-term goals through effective planning, execution, resource management, and cost control
- Ensure compliance with all laws, including OHS and environmental compliance
- Manage relationships with regulatory agencies, industry groups, and community stakeholders, representing the company’s interests in beekeeping-related matters
- Supports organisational initiatives including Philanthropic activities,7S initiatives, COVID initiatives
- Minimum 5 years managing 20+ hives
- Demonstrable experience successfully establishing beekeeping operation
- Strong financial acumen and ability to balance risk and cost and deliver positive outcomes
- Proficient in farm management software, budgeting tools, Microsoft Office Suite
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Negotiation and analytical skills and a positive attitude to continued learning
- Strong project management, time management, and organizational skills
- Self-motivated with eagerness to go above and beyond
- High level of integrity and work ethic
- Strong leader in problem-solving, idea generation and creative solutions
- Strong awareness of beekeeping best practices and methods
