About the Organization: 

The Police Athletic League (or PAL) is New York City’s largest independent youth development organization. We operate diverse programs from Head Start, Day Car and Universal Pre-K programs; to elementary and middle school after-school programs, summer day camps and summer Playstreets. We run evening teen centers and college readiness programs, as well as youth employment and juvenile justice programs. In its over a century of service, PAL is continuing its evolution and remains a vibrant and vital New York City institution.  


Position Summary: 

The Baseball Umpire is responsible for ensuring fair play and the smooth operation of league games by enforcing league rules and making impartial decisions on the field. Umpires play a key role in maintaining a safe, respectful, and sportsmanlike environment for middle school and high school student athletes. 

This position requires strong knowledge of baseball rules, sound judgment, and the ability to manage game flow while modeling professionalism and respect. 

Pay & Commitment:  

  • $100 per game (flat rate) 

  • Up to 15 games in the season 

Core Responsibilities 

Game Officiating 

  • Enforce league and baseball rules consistently and impartially 

  • Make clear, timely decisions regarding plays, scoring, and rule interpretations 

  • Maintain control of the game to ensure fair and orderly competition 

Sportsmanship & Player Safety 

  • Promote sportsmanship and respectful conduct among players, coaches, and spectators 

  • Address unsportsmanlike behavior in accordance with league policies 

  • Monitor player safety and playing conditions throughout each game 

Game Management 

  • Arrive prepared and on time for scheduled games 

  • Communicate effectively with coaches and league staff before, during, and after games 

  • Complete any required post-game reporting or documentation 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience officiating or playing baseball required 

  • Knowledge of baseball rules and game mechanics 

  • Ability to work confidently with middle school and high school athletes 

  • Strong communication skills and sound judgement 

  • Ability to remain calm, fair, and professional in a fast-paced environment 

  • Availability to work consistently for the full 21-week season 

  • 8 hours a week, 2 days a week 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:  

  • Ability to officiate game in an active outdoor or indoor environment 

  • Ability to move about the field or facility as needed 

  • Ability to perform officiating duties with or without reasonable accommodation
