Department Brief:

The candidate will be part of the ITDR Team in SRE - Site Reliability Engineering supporting PIE - Platform Infrastructure Engineering.

We are seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Backup & Recovery Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will work closely with the Backup & Recovery Specialist to support and maintain a comprehensive disaster recovery program. Your primary responsibility will be to perform data backup and recovery duties ensuring the resiliency and continuity of critical business functions in the event of a disaster. The Backup & Recovery Engineer will partake in risk assessments, contribute towards recovery plans, and provide data recovery efforts with internal teams. Good problem-solving skills, technical proficiency, and understanding of working with data backup and recovery technologies are important for this position.

Good problem-solving skills, technical proficiency, and understanding of working with data backup and recovery technologies are important for this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Backup & Recovery Specialist and cross-functional technologist in analyzing potential risks and performing data backup and recovery of identified critical IT systems.
  • Assist in maintaining backup copies of critical data and applying recovery techniques to restore data to a consistent state after a failure.
  • Contribute towards the effectiveness of the Data Backup and Retention Policy and ensure it is enforced.
  • Assist in the development of data recovery for disaster recovery plans, including strategies, procedures, and documentation for emergency response, data backup and restoration, system recovery, and infrastructure continuity.
  • Perform robust data backup and recovery for IT systems, ensuring the integrity and availability of critical data during and after a disaster.
  • Take part in regular testing and validation of data recovery procedures and support areas for improvement.
  • Provide support to employees on backup and recovery procedures and best practices to enhance organizational readiness and response capabilities.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to assess and enhance system recoverability, supporting backup schedules, updating configurations, and monitoring recovery time objectives (RTOs) and recovery point objectives (RPOs).
  • Support the evaluation of third-party vendors and service providers for backup and recovery solutions.
  • Research industry developments, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements related to data recovery, proposing recommendations for program enhancements.
  • Support incident response and data recovery efforts during crises, working closely with the Backup & Recovery Specialist and other technologists to minimize business disruption.

Minimum Requirements:

  •  3+ years proven experience in backup and recovery architecture, engineering, or operational domains with a good understanding of data retention methodologies, techniques, and industry standards.

Critical Skills:

  • Fluent in analytical skills, with the ability to identify potential risks, evaluate business impacts, and provide assurance.
  • Competence in implementing and managing backup and recovery systems, including experience with backup software, storage solutions, and disaster recovery technologies.
  • Effective problem-solving abilities and attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and completeness in procedures.
  • Good understanding of IT infrastructure, networks, operating systems, databases, and cloud platforms.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with relevant compliance regulations and frameworks, such as HIPAA or ISO 27001, ISO 22301, ISO 27031.
  • Availability to respond to emergencies outside regular working hours when necessary.

 Additional Skills:

  • Relevant certifications and coursework are a plus.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, able to facilitate and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
  • In depth knowledge of enterprise level backup solutions and their operations.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
