Our backend is one of our key differentiators in an incumbent industry. It’s the engine that powers everything we deliver: automatically bringing devices online, collecting telemetry that helps companies diagnose issues in real time, and providing APIs that enable rich integrations. As a Backend Engineer at Meter, you’ll design and scale the systems that make complex networking feel seamless, reliable, and utility-like.
The impact you’ll drive
Launch new hardware platforms consistently, ensuring each deployment feels as simple as flipping a switch
Build APIs and integrations that empower customers to extend Meter into their own workflows
Partner with frontend engineers to deliver data visualization features that make networks understandable and actionable
Build tools for internal teams such as Operations and Firmware Release Engineering to move faster and more reliably
What your craft looks like
Your work, whether building observability tools, auth middleware, RBAC, or customer-facing APIs, will be crucial in establishing core networking principles and accelerating the evolution of connectivity as a utility. We build primarily in Go, using Postgres for configuration, Kafka and ClickHouse to ingest and warehouse real-time telemetry data, and GraphQL to power integrations. We deploy across AWS and Azure, ensuring resilience and scale.
You’ll collaborate closely with frontend, firmware, and internal operations teammates to ship full-featured, production-grade systems that directly impact how businesses connect to the world.
What makes you a fit
You bring deep technical craft and hold a high bar for quality, reliability, and scalability
You thrive with autonomy, communicate with clarity, and help those around you move faster
You’re motivated by building elegant backend systems that directly touch real infrastructure and customers
You want to make an outsized impact on the foundation of a fast-growing company, where even small improvements create major leverage
Why Meter?
The internet runs the world. Every email you send, purchase you make, video call you join—it’s all packets flowing through networks. But those networks haven’t changed for decades. They’re brittle, complex, and surprisingly hard to set up in an enterprise space.
We started Meter to build better networks. We had to build everything from the ground-up: designing and building our own enterprise hardware, intuitive software, and streamlined operations to deliver great outcomes for our customers. Today, we build and deploy these networks at scale. Ambitious companies and enduring institutions like Bridgewater, Lyft, Reddit, rely on Meter to keep their thousands of employees and locations online and productive.
Our bet with Meter is simple: we will all use the internet more than we do today. We believe we have the definitive networking stack in place to enable business to do so as seamlessly and reliably as any modern utility.
Compensation
The estimated salary range for this role is $163,000 - $220,000.
Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Meter's equity plan.

Our full-stack approach combines hardware, software, and operations so that any company can seamlessly run on a reliable and modern network. We believe the internet is a fundamental utility that businesses should be able to turn on as easily as water and electricity.
Our team includes people who have helped scale successful companies and recent graduates who are eager to learn and build. We’re looking for people who are excited to work on interesting problems, enjoy learning from and helping each other, and above all, are kind and ambitious.
