We are seeking a Backend Software Engineer to design, build, and scale our SaaS-based business intelligence platform, Hummingbird PXM. The engineer will work in a fully integrated, cross-functional Agile team focused on delivering client-facing features and shared tools that power all of our products. This role is critical to building and maintaining the infrastructure and business logic that supports multiple products in our growing suite. The team works with technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, and MongoDB, and deploys updates frequently in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The Scrum team follows Agile methodology including sprint planning, reviews, groomings, retrospectives, and daily standups.

  • Collaborates with a team of backend, frontend, full stack, QA, product, and DevOps engineers to develop and deliver backend features aligned with the product roadmap

  • Designs and implements scalable RESTful APIs and microservices using Java and Spring Boot

  • Writes and maintains unit and integration tests to ensure code reliability, performance, and production-readiness

  • Works closely with product managers, QA, and engineering leads to ensure backend services meet business logic and technical requirements

  • Follows backend software engineering best practices including design patterns, peer code reviews, and version control workflows

  • Engages actively in code reviews, pair programming, and architecture discussions to improve the overall codebase and system design

  • Provides consistent updates on progress, identifies blockers, and collaborates with the team to ensure successful sprint execution

  • Takes ownership of backend architecture and system observability, ensuring logging, monitoring, and scalability best practices are in place

  • Debugs and resolves issues in all stages of the development lifecycle, with attention to production-level data and usage patterns

  • Collaborates on CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes to improve release efficiency and maintain a high level of code quality

  • Participates in roadmap planning, effort estimation, and long-term architectural decisions across a multi-product platform

  • Proactively identifies opportunities for process or codebase improvements, and communicates ideas clearly to the team

Skills & Requirements
  • 3+ years of hands-on backend development experience in a SaaS environment, preferably in a cross-functional Agile team

  • Strong experience developing in Java and Spring Boot, with a solid understanding of backend system design, microservices, and REST APIs

  • Experience working with MongoDB preferred, and familiarity with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL)

  • A statistical and analytical mindset when implementing and testing complex business logic

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to frequent changes and product growth

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, logging, monitoring, and backend system observability

  • Bonus: Experience building software for data analytics platforms or working with message bus systems

Methodologies & Best Practices
  • Proficiency in Agile development practices, including Scrum, sprint planning, retrospectives, and daily standups

  • Strong adherence to version control best practices (e.g., Git), peer code reviews, and DRY principles

  • Commitment to quality, including writing tests, validating features against production-sized datasets, and presenting demos for early feedback

  • Clear and proactive communication, with a willingness to collaborate, give and receive feedback, and support team success over individual completion

  • A growth mindset and openness to learning the system, business domain, and evolving architecture before driving technical decisions

Soft Skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing technical challenges

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with cross-functional teams

  • A collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively as part of a cross-functional team

  • Ability to collaborate closely with designers, QA engineers, and product managers to meet project goals and user experience standards

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience in the tech industry

The Benefits
  • Fully remote work, with a thriving company culture

  • Robust medical, dental, and vision plans through Blue Cross Blue Shield, including a $0 cost plan for employees and subsidized coverage for dependents

  • 401k plan with employer match

  • Flexible Paid Time Off

  • $250 new hire allowance for home office setup

Compensation Range: $120K - $150K
