Position Summary:
Blooming Health is seeking a skilled Backend Engineer with 3 to 5 years of experience to join our engineering team in building scalable, high-performance solutions for the health and aging-technology sector. As a Backend Engineer, you will develop robust server-side applications and APIs that power our platform, ensuring they are secure, efficient, and maintainable. As the first onshore member of the engineering team, you will coordinate closely with our offshore engineering and TechOps teams based in India and the Philippines. In this role, you will manage data operations, provide support, and oversee day-to-day development activities with assistance from the offshore teams.
Responsibilities:
- Application Development: Design, develop, and deploy server-side logic using modern backend technologies, ensuring code efficiency and scalability.
- API Development: Build and maintain RESTful APIs and microservices to support front-end applications and mobile app functionalities.
- Database Management: Develop and manage database queries, optimize performance, writing queries, handling data migrations.
- Cloud Integration: Work with AWS (e.g., AWS Amplify, Beanstalk) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services to deploy and manage backend infrastructure in the cloud.
- Security & Compliance: Implement security best practices, ensuring compliance with HIPAA, HITRUST, and relevant data governance standards within a health-tech environment.
- Collaboration: Work closely with front-end, DevOps, and product teams to coordinate feature development and deployment.
- Troubleshooting & Optimization: Diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks and security vulnerabilities, enhancing the stability and speed of backend services.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on emerging backend technologies, best practices, and industry trends to incorporate new tools and techniques into the development process.
Requirements:
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Backend Proficiency:
- Strong experience in backend programming languages like Java and Node.js.
- Database Knowledge: Proficient in database management with PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
- API & Microservices: Experience in developing and deploying RESTful APIs and microservices architectures.
- Cloud Experience: Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS (Beanstalk, Amplify) and GCP.
- Security & Compliance Knowledge: Familiarity with HIPAA and HITRUST compliance, as well as general data governance principles, is highly preferred.
- Problem Solving & Debugging: Excellent troubleshooting skills, with the ability to analyze and resolve complex backend issues.
- Agile Development: Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments, using version control (Git) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Communication & Collaboration: Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
Good-to-Have Skills:
- Data Governance & Privacy: Knowledge of data governance, privacy regulations, and standards for managing and protecting sensitive healthcare data.
- Healthcare Standards: Familiarity with FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) and HL7 (Health Level 7) protocols for healthcare data integration.
- Security Frameworks: Experience with security frameworks and risk management practices.
- AI & Productivity Tools: Familiarity with tools like GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT to streamline development workflows.
- Performance Optimization: Strong experience in tuning application performance and managing high-availability backend systems.
- DevOps Collaboration: Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools, such as Terraform or CloudFormation, to support scalable and repeatable deployments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in health-tech or other regulated industries, with an understanding of HIPAA, HITRUST, and data governance standards.
- Demonstrated success in managing security and compliance requirements for sensitive data.
