ON.energy is building the power infrastructure that makes the AI era possible. As AI demand surges past what the grid and traditional data centers can support, ON.energy provides a new class of power technology proven at gigawatt scale and trusted by the world’s leading cloud and AI companies. Our systems are already deployed across 2.5 GW of hyper-scale campuses, validated by top U.S. national labs, and certified for grid-safe operation by major utilities. With real products in the field, we’re scaling faster than the grid can, transforming power from a bottleneck into a competitive advantage for the companies building the future.
About the Role
We are looking for a 100% "hands-on" Senior Data Engineer to join our team. We are seeking an experienced peer to work alongside 2 Data Engineers and 1 Data Analyst. Your role will be pivotal in elevating the technical quality of our processes and helping us scale our current AWS-based data infrastructure.
If you are a seasoned engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, building resilient systems, and working in a collaborative environment, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
● Architecture & Pipelines: Design, develop, and maintain robust and scalable data flows (ETL/ELT) for both batch and real-time processing.
● Data Lakehouse Evolution: Optimize storage and the service layer, ensuring transactional integrity, high performance, and data consistency.
● Orchestration Strategy: Manage complex dependency logic and workflows, ensuring efficient execution and advanced error handling.
● Governance & Security: Implement granular access controls, data security protocols, and audit policies across the entire cloud ecosystem.
● Performance & Cost Optimization: Identify technical bottlenecks to fine-tune processes and queries, maximizing speed and cost-efficiency (FinOps).
● Analytics Enablement: Work closely with the Data Analyst to provide optimized, production-ready datasets for business reporting and decision-making.
● Reliability & Observability: Ensure platform health through proactive monitoring, automated alerting, and rigorous data quality testing.
Requirements (5 to 8 years of experience)
● AWS Expert: Deep experience with core data services such as Glue, Athena, Step Functions, Lambda, and Kinesis.
● Modern Table Formats: Essential hands-on experience working with Apache Iceberg.
● Programming & Data: Expert proficiency in Python (PySpark / Python Shell) and Advanced SQL (Window Functions, CTEs, execution plan tuning).
● Broad Ecosystem: Knowledge of various ETL/ELT tools and mastery of modeling best practices (Dimensional/Kimball).
● Reporting: Experience preparing data architectures for visualization tools and operational/management reporting.
● Databases: Practical experience with NoSQL engines (e.g., DynamoDB) and relational SQL databases.
● Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Knowledge of Terraform or AWS CloudFormation.
Nice to Have (Plus)
● Orchestration: Solid command of Apache Airflow (MWAA experience preferred) and native AWS orchestration.
● Other ETL Tools: Familiarity with dbt, Airbyte, or Fivetran.
● CI/CD: Experience automating code deployments for Glue jobs or Lambda functions.
Profile & Soft Skills
● Senior Peer: Willingness to conduct code reviews and mentor colleagues in a horizontal, collaborative way.
● Pragmatism: Ability to choose the best tool/architecture based on cost, efficiency, and project needs.
● Ownership: A strong sense of responsibility for end-to-end data quality and system availability.
● Collaboration: Excellent communication skills to partner with the Data Analyst and translate business needs into technical solutions.
