AVP, Software Engineering Leader – Corporate Functions IT

The AVP, Software Engineering Leader for Corporate Functions IT is a critical leadership role responsible for the technology platforms that support The Hartford’s corporate functions, including Enterprise Risk, Legal, Human Resources, and Shared Services.

Reporting directly to the CIO of Corporate Functions, this position requires a proven track record of leading large-scale technology transformation initiatives, balancing both business strategy and technology execution to deliver meaningful outcomes.

The leader will oversee an organization of 50+ employees and vendor resources while serving as a strategic technology partner to executive leaders across the corporate functions landscape.

The successful candidate will bring strong executive presence and the ability to collaborate across corporate functions to shape technology strategy, drive execution of complex initiatives, deliver innovative solutions, and ensure the effective management of critical technology platforms and processes.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in Hartford, CT 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Must be eligible to work in the US without company sponsorship.

Responsibilities:

Engineering Strategy & Technology Modernization

  • Partner with corporate function leaders to shape strategic technology roadmaps, prioritize investments, and deliver measurable business outcomes.
  • Lead modernization of the technology portfolio through cloud adoption, platform simplification, and the advancement of engineering best practices.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior business leaders, helping define and deliver capabilities that enable strategic priorities.
  • Ensure the stability, performance, and operational excellence of critical business applications, consistently meeting or exceeding service commitments.
  • Responsible for end-to-end ownership of the technology ecosystem supporting corporate functions, including Legal, Human Resources, Enterprise Risk, and Shared Services.
  • Champion innovation by identifying, evaluating, and implementing emerging technologies, including GenAI, to enhance business capabilities and efficiency.
  • Partner closely with enterprise technology teams (including Infrastructure, Security, Data, Architecture, and Transformation) to influence key decisions and ensure successful solution delivery.
  • Strengthen software engineering and agile delivery practices to improve organizational effectiveness, speed, quality, and scalability.
  • Lead strategic vendor relationships, including sourcing and software partners, to maximize business value, manage risk, and negotiate complex agreements.
  • Drive strategic buy-versus-build decisions, balancing business needs, technology strategy, cost, risk, and long-term sustainability.

Talent Leadership & Engineering Culture

  • Elevate high‑performing software engineering teams with an engineering and AI-first mindset.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and coaching to senior engineering talent.
  • Drive workforce strategy, succession planning, and capability uplift aligned to future‑ready engineering skills.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 15+ years of technology leadership experience, including 5+ years managing software engineering organizations, ideally supporting corporate functions.
  • Proven success leading large-scale technology transformations, including cloud modernization, enterprise platforms, and complex business-facing solutions.
  • Experience delivering integrated solutions across SaaS platforms and custom-built applications, with a strong understanding of modern technology architectures.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to translate strategy into technology roadmaps, priorities, and measurable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated success partnering with senior business leaders to influence decisions, solve complex challenges, and drive results.
  • Experience overseeing mission-critical technology platforms and operational processes, including financial, banking, and enterprise integrations.
  • Deep understanding of software engineering, agile delivery, and the full software development lifecycle.
  • Experience leveraging GenAI and emerging technologies to improve business processes, enhance productivity, and drive adoption at scale.
  • Proven people leader with a track record of building, coaching, and developing high-performing teams.
  • Exceptional collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels, including executive leadership.
  • Experience leading distributed teams, managing complex vendor relationships, and operating within global delivery models.
  • Strong systems-thinking, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to navigate strategy, architecture, and execution.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$182,000 - $273,000
