Purpose:

The Assistant Vice President of Liability Risk will have lead responsibility for collaborating with finance and actuarial to represent Risk’s oversight of liability risks across the firm. You will be the point person for insurance product and deal diligence across the range of business channels (retail, flow, institutional) and risk types (insurance risks, ALM, liquidity, collateral). The role will also be accountable for partnering closely with the Bermuda CRO and the chairs of the Liability Risk and Product Approval Committee and the Assumption Oversight Committee to ensure the assumption and product approval process is effective and the liability risk profile is well analyzed and reported upon. You will gain exposure to a broad range of items that materially impact liability risk at Athene. These include product design, policyholder behavior and related insurance risks, ALM, liquidity and collateral, deal structuring, as well as a range of regulatory capital bases and their associated pricing and solvency impacts.
This position can be based in either our Toronto office located in the Royal Bank Plaza, or our West Des Moines headquarters. Applicants from both locations will be considered.

Accountabilities:

The Assistant Vice President of Liability Risk will report directly to the Athene Bermuda Chief Risk Officer with responsibilities including:

New product and deal diligence

  • Work closely with pricing teams to analyze and provide second line challenge for all new products and deals
  • Develop and manage product pipeline report with clear view of upcoming new products and deals along with associated governance requirements
  • Develop risk report for each new product or deal that can support BMA deal application process
  • Ensure effective governance framework in place for product and related assumption approval, including effective second line review and challenge role

Liability Risk and Product Approval Committee support

  • Collaborate with Chair to develop agenda and content
  • Provide pre-meeting briefing with AHL and Bermuda CRO on material issues ahead of committee meeting including recommendation on items required for approval
  • Review liability risk reporting and monitoring with Actuarial between committee meetings and provide second line review and challenge to ensure salient liability risk items are raised in committee.

Assumption Oversight Committee support

  • Collaborate with Chair to develop agenda and content
  • Provide pre-meeting briefing with AHL and Bermuda CRO on material issues ahead of committee meeting including recommendation on items required for approval
  • Effectively represent Risk on liability related ARWGs to inform formulation of recommendations to AOC


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, actuarial science or related field
  • Actuarial Fellowship Designation (FSA, FICA, or FIA)
  • 10+ years of experience including extensive knowledge of spread based products (annuities, pension risk transfer, etc.) and reinsurance
  • Demonstrated experience within Actuarial modeling software preferred but not required
  • A sound understanding of the legal/regulatory, accounting, capital frameworks, financial reporting and compliance landscape
  • Deep understanding of risk framework, corporate/business policies, and programs to translate into plans for the business, function and/or risk type
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to manage stakeholders effectively at all levels within the organization
  • Collaborative style and demonstrated success contributing to a team environment
  • Indirect or direct people leadership experience with strong knowledge of risk management best practices and emerging industry developments
  • Proficient in MS Office suite
