Role Overview:
This role owns Planet’s virtual desktop platform on Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), providing secure, performant remote and contractor workspaces. Day to day, you will engineer host pools, golden images, profiles, and scaling, and use Azure Monitor to keep the VDI estate reliable, cost-effective, and secure within a PCI DSS environment.
What you will do:
AVD engineering — Own and operate Azure Virtual Desktop - host pools, workspaces, application groups, and session hosts.
Golden images — Build and maintain golden images and image pipelines for consistent, patched desktops.
Profiles & data — Engineer FSLogix profile containers and user data for fast, reliable sign-in.
Scaling & cost — Configure autoscaling and capacity to balance performance, availability, and Azure cost.
Performance & monitoring — Use Azure Monitor and Log Analytics to track session health, performance, and user experience; tune proactively.
Security & compliance — Apply hardening, Conditional Access, and network controls to AVD in line with PCI DSS and security standards.
Application delivery — Package and deliver applications to AVD (MSIX app attach, Intune) and manage the desktop experience.
Automation & IaC — Automate AVD build and operations with PowerShell and infrastructure-as-code (Bicep/ARM, Terraform).
Escalation & 3rd line — Act as the highest escalation point for AVD incidents and problems; drive permanent fixes.
Success Measures
A reliable, secure, and cost-optimised Azure Virtual Desktop estate - consistent golden images, fast sign-in, healthy session performance, and proactive monitoring through Azure Monitor.
Who you are:
Deep hands-on experience engineering Azure Virtual Desktop (host pools, session hosts, application groups).
Strong golden-image build and management, including image pipelines and patching.
FSLogix profile container expertise.
Experience with AVD autoscaling, capacity, and Azure cost management.
Azure Monitor and Log Analytics for VDI performance and user-experience monitoring.
Solid Azure fundamentals - networking, storage, RBAC, and Conditional Access.
Strong scripting and IaC - PowerShell and Bicep/ARM or Terraform.
Application delivery to virtual desktops (MSIX app attach, Intune).
Experience in a regulated, ITIL change-controlled environment; Azure (AZ-140) certification desirable
