Outside Sales Engineer - Automation and Material Handling Systems
Northeast Territory – Maine and NH
Compensation: Base Salary + Generous Commission | $100-250k annually

Abel Womack, Inc. seeks an experienced individual with expert knowledge and understanding of material handling systems and warehouse automation to help our new and existing customers optimize their operations and enhance productivity by applying innovative technologies & cutting edge equipment solutions.
This is a technically driven sales role where you will use your expertise in engineering, automation, and industrial systems to understand customer needs, present tailored solutions, and close deals. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure a seamless sales process and contribute to the growth of the business. What You’ll Do
Business Development & Client Engagement
- Identify and pursue new opportunities in warehousing, distribution, and manufacturing sectors.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers to drive repeat business and referrals.
- Serve as the primary technical contact throughout the sales cycle, ensuring an exceptional experience from lead to close.
Solution Design & Technical Expertise
- Consult with clients to assess operational challenges and recommend tailored material handling solutions.
- Integrate systems such as automated storage, robotics, conveyors, AS/RS, and AGVs to optimize space and productivity.
- Provide expert technical support during sales, including system design, configuration, and functionality insights.
Collaboration & Project Coordination
- Partner with account managers, engineering teams, customers, end users and suppliers to qualify, budget, and secure integration projects.
- Coordinate post-sale handoff to project managers and assist with implementation for seamless execution.
Proposal & Presentation
- Prepare and deliver comprehensive proposals with technical specs, cost estimates, and timelines.
- Present solutions that clearly communicate ROI, cost savings, and operational improvements.
Technical Review & Compliance
- Collaborate with in-house systems engineering team and project managers to ensure proposed solutions are technically feasible and align with customer requirements.
- Apply understanding of AutoCAD to view all design parameters used to develop systems, including products to be handled, throughputs and safety requirements. Review system layouts for accuracy and make changes as required to correct problem areas
- Conduct on-site verifications of existing conditions prior to the start of projects and ensure customer requirements are met before project start.
Industry Knowledge & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of Abel Womack-represented equipment and available solutions and stay informed about trends and changes in industry technology.
- Stay current on automation trends and emerging technologies to enhance solution offerings.
- Establish and maintain relationships with suppliers to support development of designs, interfaces, firm pricing and delivery schedules.
What We’re Looking For
- 4+ years’ experience in technical sales, preferably in material handling, automation, or industrial equipment. Experience as a material handling sales engineer, applications engineer, or warehouse operations or maintenance decision maker will be highly regarded.
- Proven knowledge of material handling, warehousing, industrial automation, conveyor systems, racking, system integration or warehouse operations, required. Robotics knowledge is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to serve as consultant and expert partner to organizations seeking warehouse and material handling solutions
- Ability to establish rapport with current and future customers to learn about and propose solutions to their material handling challenges.
- Must be a self-starter who is able to work independently but successfully integrate with local sales representatives and in-house engineering team
- Problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically and creatively to meet customer needs.
- Strong negotiation and closing skills with a customer-centric approach.
- AS or BS in a technical field of study such as Engineering or Industrial Technology, or equivalent experience required
- Ability to read blueprints, knowledge of electrical schematics and AutoCAD proficiency a plus.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office required. Use of Microsoft Projects a plus
- Exceptional time management skills and ability to manage several projects at the same time required A process-oriented approach to work and demonstrated attention to detail, required.
- Must be able to communicate (written and oral), and perform in a professional manner at all times while at Abel Womack, customer facilities and during business travel
- Must be able to work after normal working hours in the event of travel, time-sensitive issues or emergencies
- Must be able to travel on occasion out of the area, stay overnight for potentially several days at a time.
- Must be able to climb ladders, work at heights up to 65 feet occasionally, and comply with all relevant OSHA requirements (e.g. during project estimation, installation, implementation)
