Position Summary: 

The Automation Pharmacist is responsible for leading and overseeing the pharmacy's automation and logistics operations, ensuring accurate and timely fulfillment of all automated dispensing processes. This role leads the implementation of new automation systems, develops and maintains department policies and procedures, and ensures the automation and logistics teams meet all production, scheduling, and delivery deadlines. 

Essential Duties:

  • Supervises and leads the automation and logistics departments, including leading the implementation of new automation systems and developing policies and procedures for the department.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in operating the automation system and performing all associated tasks; takes initiative to learn assigned workflows, troubleshoot issues as they arise, and engage with the vendor for ongoing training as needed.
  • Approves technician schedules and the automation cycle fill schedule, ensuring all communities, deadlines, and holiday coverage are accounted for; assists with creating schedules when necessary. 
  • Ensures emergency orders are fulfilled and delivered in a timely manner and notifies the community of resolution efforts when delivery cannot be met.
  • Leads weekly meetings with the automation and logistics departments to align on communication and expectations, maintaining organized meeting notes and attendance records.
  • Ensures the automation department maintains regulatory compliance, including preparing for and assisting with compliance audits and inspections.
  • Oversee training of pharmacy staff on automation systems and workflows and verifies the accuracy of physician order transcription performed by other pharmacy employees.
  • Analyzes prescribing trends and automation workflow data to monitor efficiency and compliance, and to help prevent harmful interactions or excessive usage.
  • Maintains up-to-date professional and technical knowledge through continuing education, vendor training, and industry involvement.
  • Must be willing to participate in vaccination administration when requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $150,000–$170,000 annually, based on experience. As an exempt position, this role is not eligible for overtime pay.

Qualifications, Education and/or Experience: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.

  • Registered Pharmacist or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from an accredited school; must be licensed.
  • 5–10 years of pharmacist experience, preferred.
  • 2+ years of pharmacy automation experience, preferred.
  • Strong technical skills and ability to lead and troubleshoot within an automated pharmacy environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to lead cross-departmental teams effectively.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to frequent interruptions.

The conditions listed below define the experience of working in the at the pharmacy office or while traveling. 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand/move, communicate, and identify written information. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds independently; occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds with assistance.
  • A minimum of 25% of travel is required, with travel not to exceed 50%, including visits to assisted living facilities across multiple states. 
  • Participation in rotating call schedules is required. 
  • Must be able and willing to work on-site during rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays. The ability to work during inclement weather is expected.
  • Personal cell phone use is restricted during working hours. Phones must be stored in designated employee lockers during shifts.
  • Requires flexibility to meet daily and weekly deadlines, as the posted schedule may not reflect the hours required - including occasional unscheduled weekends due to unexpected automation downtime.
  • Participates in weekend, holiday, and on-call rotation; on-call responsibilities include timely response to calls (returning missed calls within one hour).
  • This position is required to work onsite at the Pharmacy.
