Charter Steel is hiring an Automation and Controls Engineer Intern!

Program Structure:

  • Duration/Schedule: Flexible part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer months.
  • Location: Onsite - Cleveland
  • Start Date: May 2026

What We’re Looking For:

  • Enrollment in a four-year degree program in Electrical/Controls Engineering or a related field with current status of at least a Sophomore level.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building abilities.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to handle multiple tasks and shifting priorities.

Preferred Experience:

  • Training in PLC languages.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft SQL, Wonderware InTouch.

What You’ll Focus On:

  • Assist with design and evaluation of automation and control systems.
  • Design, research, and update the graphical user interfaces utilized by operators to improve production workflow.
  • Participate in Continuous Improvement and process documentation projects.
  • Learn to navigate, develop, and troubleshoot HMI software and assist in integrating new process equipment (such as safety lasers, proximity switches, robotics, and PLCs) into the HMI environment.
  • Test and monitor systems to ensure functionality, address issues, and adjust automated processes as needed.
  • Develop an understanding of steelmaking process and how control systems drive operational excellence.
  • Build skills in project management and professional communication through regular status updates and team collaboration.
  • Propose design changes and improvements for future automation projects.
  • Follow Environmental, Quality and Safety Management System procedures and requirements.
