About the Position
We are looking for an Attorney to join our Legal and Compliance team and work on a variety of interesting projects. To thrive in this role, you will need to be a strong communicator who would take initiative and enjoy the challenge of analyzing the novel legal questions facing Jane Street as we grow.
Our firm trades continuously on more than 200 electronic exchanges across three continents, and it’s our team’s responsibility to protect our colleagues as they focus on their daily work. We advise on everything from real-time questions about how and where we trade, to helping teams navigate updates to regulatory environments, to negotiating contracts and structuring our legal entities as we expand into new products and markets worldwide.
Day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Shaping our internal governance documents and structural set-up
- Working on our external capital raises
- Collaborating with our internal teams (and external counsel where necessary) to ensure that our legal risks are managed properly
- Providing time-sensitive legal advice on questions related to regulatory interpretation and compliance controls as they arise
- Working with our trading desks to review and comment on legal documents associated with new trading flows, and to keep new trading initiatives compliant

About You
- Have 3+ years of experience in a law firm
- Have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and New York Bar admission (or is able to qualify)
- Able to understand a complex waterfall in an operating agreement (and more broadly embrace work with quantitative aspects)
- Familiar with tax concepts; able to work well with colleagues in tax, HR, and accounting
- Strong communicator; able to distill complex legal concepts into simple, actionable recommendations and provide guidance under time-sensitive conditions
- Have pragmatic commercial acumen and impeccable business judgment
- Able to handle competing priorities in a challenging, fast-paced, and often ambiguous environment
- Self-starter who can take initiative and work independently, while also appreciating the collaborative nature of our firm and establishing strong cross-functional partnerships
- Can demonstrate project planning and organizational skills, especially with hands-on deal management
