Job Summary:
The Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (“HOOPP”) is a $120 billion Canadian pension plan managed for the nurses and healthcare workers of Ontario. The Public Equities team has two major roles at HOOPP. We provide independent, robust research on Public Equity markets and on specific companies, and we use this research to generate returns in our own portfolios and by collaborating with other investment teams at HOOPP. The team's culture is focused on achieving results through collaboration and driving growth through continuous improvement.
The Associate, Public Equities will use their excellent analytical and research skills to support decision making and collaboration by the team. In addition, the ideal candidate could use process design insights and coding skills to improve the efficiency of the team's existing workflows. Strong time management will help the Associate, Public Equities manage competing demands on their time.
What you will do:

Company Coverage & Research Management: Provide coverage of 20–25 Canadian and U.S.-listed companies, mainly in the Information Technology sector. Maintain comprehensive research files for each company. The Associate will also help in maintaining a centralized database of valuation inputs.

Industry Research & Market Insights: Prepare and update sector-level analytics such as comp sheets and benchmarking tools. Provide insights on the impact of technological and market trends on covered companies and assist in evaluating portfolio and risk implications.

Private Fundraising & IPO Diligence: Assist in due diligence for IPO and pre-IPO opportunities by attending investor meetings and preparing notes, business profiles, valuation models, and peer comparisons.

Workflow Improvements & Tool Development: Contribute to refining research workflows by trialing new tools, using programming or automation to improve data handling and analysis. Help build databases or BI dashboards to support team efficiency.

Operational Support & Engagement Initiatives: Support broader team operations including trade analysis, risk management, and performance tracking. Provide administrative support as needed to facilitate daily team functions.
What you bring:
-
University degree in a Liberal Arts, Business/Commerce, or Math/Sciences/Engineering discipline. CFA designation is an asset but not a requirement.

2-6 years of experience in Investment Banking, Equity Research, Private Equity, Buy-Side Research, or Management Consulting is an asset, but other relevant backgrounds will be given strong consideration.

A genuine passion and enthusiasm for the Information Technology industry, and/or demonstrated experience conducting fundamental analysis and quantitative valuation work on companies within the North American Information Technology sector.

Programming ability in one or more languages to manipulate data and generate well-formatted output is an asset.

Clear written and verbal communication skills.

Keen interest in Public Equities as an asset class, and deep enthusiasm for the broader capital markets.

A consistent record of excellence and accomplishments.

Strong work ethic, a positive, adaptable, and enthusiastic approach to learning and collaborating, flexibility to take input from multiple team members to advance various team priorities.
