CBC Toronto is looking for a promising journalist to fill the key role of associate producer on our assignment desk.

The ideal candidate will be a positive and driven journalist working to deliver multi-platform stories that will have an impact on the audience.

You love breaking news and are able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances during a busy news day. Excellent writing and chase abilities are essential.

You are passionate about everything that makes this city what it is - its people, its neighbourhoods, its culture, its politics, its business. You are deeply connected to communities across the GTA and have a passion for sharing their stories. 

You understand current trends in news programming on mobile and streaming platforms - as well as tradition broadcast platforms. 

You excel at multitasking and know how to prioritize multiple stories and tasks. You thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

The position requires full-time, on-site presence in the evenings at the Toronto Broadcast Centre.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the assignment producer, newsgathering teams, program leads, digital journalists, as well as videographers and video producers to deliver news coverage in the Greater Toronto Area.

  • Chase daily news stories and identify possible angles, guests, follows and story treatments for all platforms.

  • Help manage outlooks, shotlists and pitches. 

  • Edit video and audio

  • Write quick, accurate stories in breaking news situations, as needed.

We are looking for a candidate with the following: 

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with at least 2 years of practical and relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated solid news judgment and a strong understanding of the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Extensive experience working in an assignment role.

  • Strong contributor of story, guest and treatment ideas.

  • The ability to plan ahead and help effectively organize news coverage for multiple platforms.

  • High level of organization and productivity.

  • Strong & enthusiastic team player with good communication skills.

  • Initiative taker, with ability to be productive in individual and team settings.

  • Comfort and fluency with a variety of editing and publishing tools (Dalet, Avid, 9CMS, etc).

  • Able to work flexible hours.
