Summary Generated by Built In

Do you want to be a part of a company that is a leader in the energy industry?  Our team strives to provide our customers with innovative energy solutions tailored to each client.  Half of the entire Honeywell portfolio is linked directly to energy efficiency, and we have completed over 5,000 efficiency projects that are expected to deliver more than $5 billion in utility and operational savings around the globe.  The Honeywell Energy Services Group (HESG) does not just focus on a singular set of solutions, but rather, takes a comprehensive view of the entire facility to identify potential opportunities, discover issues, and identify recommended improvements.  We help our customers create an energy strategy that addresses financial obligations and provides scalability for the future.

We are currently seeking a Microgrid Design Engineer to support HESG project development throughout our North America region.  In this capacity you will engage primarily in Commercial & Industrial (C&I) projects to provide sales support and engineering support to the team.  In this role, you will work alongside experienced engineers to develop distributed energy resource (DER) solutions — including solar PV, battery energy storage (BESS), fuel cells, and combined heat and power (CHP) systems — that help our customers achieve energy resilience, cost savings, and sustainability goals.

Areas of job responsibility and associated skills:

Microgrid Feasibility Support and DER Solution Development — Conduct site assessments and compile data required for feasibility studies, including load profiles, utility rate structures, and onsite generation potential. Apply financial modeling techniques such as LCOE and IRR/NPV to support DER solution development. Navigate incomplete site data, legacy drawings, and brownfield conditions to produce reliable project estimates and preliminary designs. Support scope, schedule, and cost management during the preliminary design phase.

Systems Engineering and Stakeholder Engagement — Design and analyze electrical distribution systems, BESS, solar PV, CHP, and microgrid controllers across assigned projects. Contribute to Scope of Work (SOW) documentation for EPC partners under the direction of senior engineers. Communicate technical findings clearly to project team members and external stakeholders. Support client-facing presentations and briefings on DER system design, economics, and operational value. Utilize modeling platforms (HOMER, Xendee, ETB, etc.) and discounted cash flow (DCF) tools to support project economic analysis.

Project Development Process Adherence — Collaborate within cross-functional teams of power engineers, project managers, and software developers. Prepare and contribute to contract documents in accordance with industry standards and internal best practices. Support Measurement & Verification (M&V) activities, including review and analysis of post-commissioning performance data for peak shaving and energy arbitrage outcomes. Contribute to ensuring consistency between modeled performance and implemented systems.

Delivery Operations Support — Provide engineering support to project execution teams during post-contract phases. Participate in technical reviews of EPC and OEM submittals, identifying gaps or non-conformances relative to project specifications and client requirements. Support troubleshooting and resolution of technical issues as they arise.

An estimated 30% travel will be required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop energy and financial models to evaluate DER solutions, including solar PV, BESS, and CHP systems (tariff optimization, ROI, LCOE, resiliency valuation).
  • Support microgrid system design and architecture development, including electrical configurations, control strategies, and interconnection requirements.
  • Perform techno-economic analysis using tools such as HOMER, Xendee, or equivalent platforms.
  • Implement peak shaving, load shifting, and demand response strategies to optimize system performance.
  • Analyze site-specific inputs (load profiles, tariffs, space constraints, interconnection limits) to support DER sizing and optimization.
  • Develop feasibility studies, conceptual designs, and proposal development.
  • Support RFP responses, including technical documentation and preliminary engineering packages.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to review system designs, SOWs, and EPC deliverables.
  • Participate in client meetings and site visits to gather data and validate assumptions.
  • Define resiliency strategies, including critical load identification and outage scenarios.
  • Track and incorporate energy market trends, incentives, and regulatory frameworks into project analysis.
  • Prepare client-facing materials and technical presentations with clear articulation of system value.
  • Support internal teams by translating technical outputs into business-aligned insights.
