This Associate General Counsel position will report to the Senior General Counsel of Real Estate and assist in providing legal support and guidance to the UnitedHealth Group Real Estate Services team, which manages real estate interests across UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare, and Optum. This attorney will advise on a wide range of matters including lease interpretation, lease negotiations, and disputes. The successful candidate will have experience drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial real estate agreements for both owned and leased real property, conducting M&A due diligence, and drafting and negotiating deal terms on real estate matters. This Associate General Counsel will be required to provide excellent analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills and work collaboratively with the Real Estate Legal team as well as business and legal teams across the organization. As a member of the corporate legal team, this attorney will be expected to work in a team-oriented, fast-paced, results-driven practice group.
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide legal and strategic advice on all aspects of real estate matters to the UnitedHealth Group Real Estate Services team
- Draft, review, and negotiate various commercial real estate agreements including leases and related documents (e.g., letters of intent, subleases, intercompany leases, estoppels, landlord consents, amendments, assignments, etc.), constructions agreements, licenses, NDAs, options, deeds and other documents
- Oversee commercial real estate transactions, including leasing, sales and dispositions and related closing matters
- Advise Real Estate Services leadership on real estate strategy and operations
- Interpret and deliver sound business guidance regarding real estate related agreements and documents
- Manage and resolve real estate issues and disputes
- Assist in the review, drafting, maintaining and updating of key real estate templates
- Prepare and deliver presentations to business partners and senior leadership on general legal and real estate topics

Required Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school; admitted to at least one state bar in the U.S.
- 5+ years of commercial real estate legal experience
- Experience with drafting and negotiating commercial leases and related agreements within a diverse real estate portfolio
- Proven solid understanding of commercial real estate industry
- Ability to manage, handle and prioritize multiple projects
- Ability to effectively advocate/problem-solve as necessary to obtain desired outcomes and meet business requirements
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting with other attorneys and business staff of multiple levels; ability to work in a matrixed environment
- Proven well-developed written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated poise and confidence necessary to deal with senior lawyers and business leaders
- Ability to identify issues and offer proactive, timely advice and follow through to resolution
- Proven excellent presentation creation and delivery skills, including experience with PowerPoint, Excel, and other standard tools
- Ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external company contacts
Preferred Qualifications:
- CA license
- Law firm or in-house experience
- Proven ability to devise business-friendly, pragmatic business solutions with effective presentation of risks and anticipated outcomes
- Proven ability to prioritize work with a sense of urgency, pivot seamlessly as needed, and work with agility to deliver high quality, timely work product
- Experience in healthcare with in-depth knowledge of STARK and The Anti-Kickback Statute
- Proven high EQ and exceptional organization skills and attention to detail

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $134,600 to $230,800 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
